My pictures are gone...

I was trying to get the pictures off of my camera. I was struggling to hold the tempermental camera usb cable the correct way (or else it won't work), and in the process, the pictures somehow got deleted from the camera. I got to the screen where I could see the pictures come up and I was trying to select them to save them to my computer. Is there any way to find them? Where would they have gone? Are they on the computer somewhere or are they gone forever?

Also, check to make sure you're looking in the right location on your camera. Most of them store the pictures in a subfolder on the memory card, sometimes two levels deep.

What does this mean?! I have an older camera. It just has a "picture" mode for taking pictures, and a mode on the dial for reviewing pics. There's no memory card, just what's on the camera itself. When I switch it to view the pics, it says "no image."

With most digital cameras (all that I've used anyway), when you connect them to your computer with a USB cable they show up on the computer as another drive letter (usually the next letter after your CD Rom drive). Connect your camera to your computer, open My Computer, and look at the drive letters. If you have any drives besides C: and whatever your CD Rom is, then open that drive. There will probably be just one folder on that drive - open it up and see if your pictures are there (usually a lot of .jpg files). No pictures? There might be just one folder inside that folder - open it up and look for your pictures. Still don't see any? Well then you probably did lose them.
