So my puppy (I call her puppy, she is 11 lol) has had some lab results that show her kidneys are not working properly..she has been drinking gallons of water and peeing a ton..thats why we took her in..anyway the vet said to change her food to a kidney diet..and have her blood rechecked in a few weeks...anyone have experience with this?

I have done some research myself..but I want to make her as comfortable as possible..and of course extend her life as much as possible..with good quality..any suggestions? Any particular brand of food? Anything we can add to make it tastier? Anything I can do to make her feel better? I can tell she is not feeling good..and I am watching her while my parents are on vacation..so shes also a little sad they are gone...i was hoping someone on here had a pet with kidney issues..who could share some tips with me..my poor pup :(

One of my dachshunds has kidney problems and is on Prescription Diet KD. She has been on this a couple of years and is doing well on it. She is around 10 years old and she is on this because her kidneys were not doing well. She is on the dry form of the diet. 10lb bag is almost $30.00 so it is expensive. I have no problems with her eating it, so it must taste good to her.

that's one of the ones the vet mentioned..we realized it would be pricey..but for my dad's puppy he would feed her prime rib if he had too..lol..but im glad she eats it some sites said that it isn't as tasty because of the lower protein..

I'm sorry to hear that :( I guess the kidneys are prone to go bad on most species.

luckily there is dialysis for people while they are waiting..good luck to your dad!

Was your pup tested for diabetes? I've been dealing with diabetes with one of mine and you described the biggest red flags - excessive driking and peeing - to a tee. Weight loss is another big red flag but that may not be evident as soon as the others.

yes, that was what we thought it may be..turned out it wasn't diabetes..or cushings..just age related kidney problems.

So my poor puppy is going downhill pretty quick.. we are looking at putting her down in the next week or so if we can't get her better..shes just looking terrible..and not enjoying her life. :( :( :( :frown:

We got her the special kidney diet..and she did opk on it for a few days..then it started making her sick..and she couldnt keep it down. We took her to the vet and got her hydrated (doing it at home now) and are giving her pepcid and feeding her rice and chicken..but she wont eat..and if she does have something she cant keep it down. I am just so upset..my puppy is just not doing well..she looks so miserable...She did pretty well when the doc gave her a SHOT of the pepcid..so we are looking around to see if we can find those..any ideas? I tried southern states..and we may just call the vet and get a couple if we cant find em somewhere..

I just don't know what to do. we are doing what we can..but we have to keep in mind that she is old..and overtreating would not help any of us...I'm just so sad. My puppy has been my best friend for the last 11 years. I want to do what is absolutely the best for her...:bawl::bawl::bawl:

Im so sorry to hear this.... :huggy::huggy:

the injection of Pepcid is only avail. at the vet. .. you can give them OTC pepcid but you will have to ask the vet the dosage.

If you need anything... let us know!

I'll try to send you a pm later tonight about some things I bought that seemed to buy my foster more time.

Awww, sorry to hear this. It's so heartbreaking to watch our furry 4 legged children suffer. To lose them is so difficult, I hate the decision you have to make. Good luck to you and your pup. :huggy:

Kidney problems are one of those "iffy" things - some animals can go forever with minimal maintenance, and some crash no matter what you do. Sometimes, if a pet is having the problems you describe, a stay at the vet, where she can get fluids and the antiemetics until her system stabilizes on her meds, is that is needed - but sometimes you are putting an animal who is at the end of its life in a cold, lonely vet office, when they would rather just die quietly in your arms.

Is the spark still in her eyes? If so, a few more interventions might be worth trying - if not, then the best thing might be to help her let go before she is in any pain. I sympathize with the decision you have to make, having made it many, many times before. It doesn't get any easier, either :(

Thank you to everyone who has commented and sent me Pms..it is so nice to know that people know how tough it is...I am comforted knowing that i am not the only one...:flowers:

I went over to see her (shes at my parents house) and she just looks so pitiful. I bought her some glycerin swabs because her mouth is very dry because shes not drinking much..and swabbed her mouth..I rehydrated her..(under the skin..pretty neat how they do that) and actually got her to eat a few pieces of ham..(not the best for her kidneys, but it was the ONLY thing she would eat) ...and it seemed like it helped her be a little more comfy. we helped her go outside to potty..she seemed to have a really hard time with her back leg..but she came up the steps on her own.

It's so hard..she looks ok sometimes..other times she looks nothing like herself. We are doing what we can to make her as comfy as possible...poor old girl :(

Well she passed peacfully about an hour ago. She was just so sick. We couldn't get her to eat or drink more than a lap or two..she could barely walk and was just...not her..she was already gone. We stayed with her while she got the tranq..and we let her go peacfully. No more pain for her. we can remember her like she was.

Dr. Feldhous is wonderful. What a kind and honest woman. We all knew we were doing the right thing.

RIP best friend:bawl:
