My son just got accepted...

into pre school! I am so excited. As this is my first and only child and my first expierence with preshool. What should I expect for him to learn? Some say that pre k is a waste. What do u folks think? Pros and cons?

Where?

My oldest went to Pre-K at Dent. I think it is great. If nothing else, it gives them a chance to "ease" in to school. I highly engourage people to take advantage of pre-K for their children.

Has your child had much interaction with other children? Pre-K is a good place for kids to start to learn how to get along with others.

I am not 100% sure what the name of the school is. It's on Great Mills road here in Lexington Park. My ex wife called me about an hour ago and told me that the principal called her and told her the good news.
Where my ex wife lives (she has custody) there are litterally no kids my son's age. So this will give him a good opportunity to mingle with kids his own age. :)

Both of my kids went to pre-K and I think it's a good social experience for them. Plus it gets them ready for kindergarten. Your son will do pretty much what they do in K - color, make things, get an introduction to reading, telling time, etc.
Congrats!

Sounds like George Washington Carver Elementary School. They are currently in the Great Mills Annex, a temporary location while the new school is being built behind McKay's.

PreK is an excellent opportunity. The curriculum is intended to prepare the child for kindergarten and 1st grade. Some students will learn only to sit when told to, others will gain valuable pre-reading and pre-math skills. It is a great introduction to school.

Thanks for the positive words....
Can I ask why it's such a waste?

My personal experience was that my child learned more from me than she did in the classroom. She was a good deal ahead of most children her age, so she was bored most of the time.

I also preferred her playing with children who were friends or close neighbors because I was aware of their behavior and personality.

I don't know why you found the need to roll your eyes. I responded directly to your question.

Just got off the phone with my ex wife (yay!) and confirmed after reading your post. Yes it is GW Carver. Sooo that's whats going up behind the McKays? Think after living here for 6 years that I'd keep up with the happenings.

Being twins, my sister and I had the benefit of interacting with eachother, but I think that it's still a positive thing to expose young children to social interactions/environments. They may not be able to tell you what they learned, but I believe it's not a waste of time and/or money.

Plus, they may not fake illness as often once grammar school begins, because they have gotten used to the regimen (without mommy or daddy).

:yeahthat: I think the social aspect is the best. They learn the world doesn't revolve around them and they get skills to solve the little everyday kiddie problems of sharing, personality conflicts etc.

However, be prepared to have a lot of snotty noses, barfing episodes and generally any crud that happens to be running through school for the next year or so.
