Mysterious helicopter involved in the Osama Raid

"When I read the news reports describing the operation the US Special Forces conducted in Pakistan to catch Osama Bin Laden I wasn’t particularly surprised to read that a UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter carrying the Navy Seals crashed.

What struck me were actually the pictures that were published by the Daily Mail (thanks to Giuliano Ranieri for the heads up!). They show what should be the remains of the Black Hawk crashed during the raid that killed Bin Laden on May 2, 2011, at Abottaville, north of Islamabad, Pakistan (officially, after experiencing a mechanical fault).

Military on board the helicopter escaped safely on another helo while the downed one was destroyed leaving only few parts near the Bin Laden’s compound.

However, the depicted horizontal stabiliser and tail rotor of the wreckage don’t seem to be a any form of H-60. Both the shape and position are not common to either Black Hawks or Apaches helicopters. Noteworthy, the tail rotor has a weird cover that could be anything from a stealth cover, to an armour plate to a noise reduction device."

Granted I've not watched at ton of coverage on this but from what I have seen I've not once heard that it was a UH-60 that took the Seals in.

WDF. So worth the wait.

A UH-60 is a Black Hawk. The Navy's SH-60 is a Seahawk, Coasties call it a Jay Hawk but they are all a version of the H-60.

And the spec ops version is the HH-60 G Pavehawk, which is a lot like the Navy HH, but with a lot more comm, navigation and survivability stuff in it. I know I assumed it would be some variant of a "Pave" bird involved, be it 47, 53, or 60, and did wonder at them destroying the whole bird, and not just the "special bits". Outside of the gear, the helos themselves, as far as I know, are just normal birds.

I'm well aware of what they all are. The op said some kind of shape shifting UH-60 took the Seals in, I was simply saying that I hadn't heard that at all.

I don’t think that is part of a real aircraft. The reason I say this is I don’t see any rivits, screws or bolts. I don’t see any hardware. the photo shows what should be some kind of rotor or prop, I see no fastners to give you access to the bearbox that this so called rotor is attached to for maintenance. anyone elses thoughts on this?

with all the problems involving Black Hawks and RPG's I would have expected the Military to come up with a solution

I didnt read "shape shifting". What I read was that he (the reporter linked) expected the pics to be of a 60, but was surprised to see nothing that looks remotely like the tail of a 60.

not a lot of fasteners here either.........a few, but this bird is meant for ordinary folks to maintain. If you dont have to follow normal flight hour to maint hour giudelines, no reason you cannot bury your fasteners below a layer of stuff you pick out if you need to get at them.

And my first post in this thread was that I hadn't heard anywhere that it was supposed to be a 60. :banghead:
