An explosion that appears to be in the 550-800 kiloton range explosion is very well in the realm of accomplishment with conventional explosives, and I would bet that's exactly what North Korea used. Also, note that the North Koreans have been very vocal about how they were able to contain 100% of the radiation from their test explosion. Even the most recent US, Soviet, and French underground tests have yielded some increased radiation, yet the North Koreans are scampering about at the get go claiming they've contained 100% of theirs. The only way they could be that sure there would be no radiation increases detected would be if they knew for sure there would be no radiation to be detected, i.e., they didn't have a nuclear detonation.
I think you mean the 500 - 880 TON range.. kiloton means the equivalent of 1000 tons of dynamite.. What they were aiming for (we thought) was something in the 4.2 kiloton range, and the actual explosion was much less like in the .5 kiloton or 500 ton range. Either it was a dismal failure, or it was a ruse from the beginning, them underestimating our intelligence gathering.

Of course the populace of North Korea will only hear that it was an unbelievably successful test, that they are now a nuclear superpower!!

I'd have to look it up, but we own the record for the largest conventional explosion on earth.. I don't remember how big it was.

I know this might be a dumb question but is it at all possible for those seismic sensors to go offline or be interrupted somehow?
Sure, but there would be indications of that. Are you saying go offline due to EMP? If that's the question, they'd go offline and not come back online. If you mean by a power outage, they probably have a battery backup (just in case) and there would probably be time recorded along with the seismic data. If there's a pause/interruption, it would be in the time code as well.

NHK World:

North Korea may have conducted a 2nd nuclear test on Wednesday morning, Japanese government source says. A tremor in North Korea has reportedly been observed.
US State Dept. source has told NHK that it has no information regarding the latest tremor detected in North Korea. CIA says it has no information about a nuclear test.

North Korea's state-run media including Korean Central News Agency has not reported that the country conducted a 2nd nuclear test.

Major Japanese companies have set up a think tank to advise the government on diplomatic and security policies. It will be funded by 4 companies, including Toyota Motor Corp., Canon, Nippon Steel, and Tokyo Electric Power.

And MSNBC STILL hasn't reported on this :tantrum:

Keith Olbermann was #####ing about Foley for the first half hour... Now they're investigating a bill passed by Congress that would allow anybody to be detained without a trial and without justification.

I don't know, they only mentioned the original missile tests on July 4th in one 30 second report and a 2 minute NBC News Special Report when that happened. Their 6 year old documentaries were too important. "Crime doesn't take a holiday" but news does...
