N.Y. Senator Pushes For Cameras On Cop Handguns

The jury...

the guy who got shot 50 times a day before his wedding by NY police officers and they were let off.

oh...yeah and he was unarmed.

...acquitted them. I'm all for the gun cams. It's possible that gun cams would have shown the officers were justified. Maybe keep that in mind.

Well yeah if you don't consider that a 4500 lb. SUV could easily kill us soft humans.

I think a better idea would be put cameras on everyone else's guns. That way you could see an asshat coming to rob you from the bright light his gun gives off.

Showing me the camera doesn't mean a thing, show me the video.

I think all in all, if that's the camera AND the recorder the video won't be of good quality, add to that the 'cameraman' is holding it out from his body with one our two hands, recoil, running.. etc.. etc.. Video would largely be worthless, unless they plan on paying upwards of 10k on each cop that carries a gun.

Add that (an assumption) that most shootings are at night, or in low light situations, degrades the quality of the video further.

Just like the CCTV footage from Uncle Earls liquor store robbery.. doesn't do much good when you can barely tell there's a person in frame let alone trying to identify them, or trying to determine what, if anything is in the perpetrators hands.

I could see this costing cops not only their livlihood but their freedom.. You watch the crappy video in the courtroom and you can't be 100% the perp he shot was armed, he goes to jail.

To give you an idea of what I am talking about go get a 4X - 12X scope, run 1/2 mile stop and try to focus the reticle on a spot on the wall 25 feet away. Hold the scope out at arms length, with not support and see what it is you may be looking at downrange.

You covered the theory I initially tried to convey quite well.

After the first shot, you aren't going to be able to see anything  How good a quality camera do you think they're going to get on a handgun? It has to be portable (battery powered), small, possibly activated whenever their gun is drawn...this is all wishful thinking IMHO. And, as stated previously, how clear is anything going to be after a shot is fired?

:bs:

My teeny-tiny cell phone camera can record at 128kbps 320x240.

Nah, camera tech has gotten pretty spiffy over the last two years. There are some NICE "lipstick" cameras that provide 800x600 feeds, and stand alone image stabilization has made it as well. I have a box here that will stabilize ANY NTSC signal you pump into it and the same company sells software to stabilize any digital source (MotionJPEG, H264, and others) . Shoot, you can get IS software as shareware/freeware now!

The technology is DEFINITELY there. I used something similar to this Micro Video Camera in a UGV a couple YEARS ago. Some of the new stuff includes local data storage as well!! :jet:

...he damn well is a whole lot more cautious about situations he gets into and we, finally, face the fact that cops are there to solve crimes and arrest perps, not to prevent anything. Then we admit it is up to the individual if your life is worth defending or not.

never work.

Just last month in PG county, between 7 to 10 police cars had the video cameras that are REQUIRED under federal law in their cars found to be NOT WORKING when they were asked for.
