Points change to be announced in Jan at Daytona? NASCAR Chairman and CEO Brian France has said repeatedly that the sanctioning body likely will change its points structure again in 2011. Whether winning becomes more of a factor remains to be seen, but expect big changes next season. France is expected to announce the new system Jan. 21, 2011, during winter testing at Daytona International Speedway.(in part from SPEED)(12-5-2010)

Rumor is they're going to enter an elimination style playoff, resetting the points through the Chase and having a "game 7" at Homestead.

The points system wasn't broke, it worked for a quarter of a century. Then, along comes Brian France fixing it because Matt Kenseth won one race en route to his 2003 Winston Cup championship.

But, alas, since we're in to the Chase now, allow me to propose my Chase.

The Chase will be 36 races with 43 drivers contending. The points will be reset to 0 at the Daytona 500 in February. The driver with the most points during The Chase wins the Championship.

Also, I propose changes to qualifying. No more top-35 or provisionals. The cars qualify 22 hours before the race. The fastest 43 cars start on Sunday. Everyone else goes home.

While at it, lets get rid of the lucky dog and wave-around :bs:. :yay:

My last proposal: A driver signs in each week and checks a box saying which ONE race he/she will collect points in. The Cup drivers gotta be run out of Nationwide -- it's starting to do serious damage to the sport.

These concepts worked for decades... why did Brian France have to change the points system???:smack::smack::smack:

Every item except for the "Lucky Dog " I agree with ! I would like to see a "play off" race with the season Champion having the pole and having a field of 15 having a 75 lap "shootout " for the Championship. 1 manatory pit stop

I don't. The old points system worked for a quarter of a century.

The Chase is the reason ticket sales are way down. NASCAR can say it's the economy, but it's not. If it was, ticket sales in every other sport would be down just as much as NASCAR and so would TV ratings. Brian France has pissed off long-time fans with a plethora of moves (the Chase, moving the Southern 500 at Darlington to May, making it easier for the Cup drivers to run Nationwide full time).

ARCA, IndyCar and F1 don't need a playoff to have close points battles... wonder why? (Hint: They don't run 36 races a year)

End the season Labor Day Weekend at Atlanta or Darlington or mid-September at Daytona.

I like your idea of bringing it "back to the past." Let's us say the "average" champion wins 5 times a year. That same driver might have 5-7 top 5 finishes. Now, hypothetically, if someone were to win 5 of the first 10 races and finishes in the top 5 the other 5 races - the season would, in essence, be over as he would have amassed enough points to build an almost insurmountable lead. If you start the season in Feb, in theory, it could be over 10 weeks later or by the beginning of May - giving me enough time to watch paint dry AS THAT IS MORE EXCITING THAN NASCAR!!!!

Sometimes watching NASCAR is like watching grass grow.

If they shorten the season, no big issues. ARCA doesn't have a problem with runaway championships. IndyCar doesn't have a problem. F1 doesn't have a problem. NHRA and NASCAR are the only motorsports with this problem and only national motorsports with a playoff. And it's pitiful in both series.

I've been told numerous times that NASCAR wasn't going to change their points system and that I should get over it. Man, that has got to be some tasty crow.

(Sadly, I think they're going to make it worse)

Seems like a lot of concern about a stock car racing association that doesn't race stock cars

But, here is the short-sightedness to the run away championship..if there is drama - casual fans might be more inclined to watch thus increasing ad revenue, putting more fannies in the seats, etc.

If the season runs through Sept but a racer has built an insurmountable lead by June - who will watch? Sure, the die hards will...but your original post has mentioned "declining attendence." Imagine the decline if there is nothing to draw in new people!!!

There should be. Brian France is killing the sport.

WRC, win on Sunday, sell on Monday

In order for a vehicle to be able to take part in FIA approved races it has to be produced to a minimum number of units by its manufacturer, 5000 for the GroupN class, 2500 for the GroupA class and 200 for the now extinct GroupB. These units have to be similar, in aspect and mechanically, to the ones that will effectively take part in racing i.e. if the racing vehicle has a 4 wheel drive transmission so must also have the homologation base vehicle. Certain mechanical and electronic parts that are present in the racing vehicle must also be present in the homologation base unit. If modifications are required to the competition version then a new series of street going vehicles that include them will have to be produced.

NASCAR used to have similar homologation requirements

Report: NASCAR may scrap current points system - ESPN

The sanctioning body wants to go to a scoring system that would award 43 points to the race winner, and one point less for each ensuing position down to one point for the 43rd-place finisher.

NASCAR legend claims the current system was devised on a napkin over drinks at a Daytona bar in 1974 and implemented the next season. The complicated scoring method gives 175 points to the winner, and decreases in increments of five points and then three points down to 34 points for the last-place finisher.

:killingme and it's still better than the crap system Brian France imported from the USAR Pro Cup Series.

It almost sounds too simple to say, 'whoever wins the most races in a 36 race season wins the championship.'

Don't think that's really fair either -- look up Rusty Wallace 1993 and 1994. Consistency through the entire season should be rewarded, but fans whined because Kenseth won the championship in 2003.
