For your consideration ...

You've been in business for yourself, how long did you say??

Well, to be fair, that amount is a bit excessive, even if it did include installation.

The double edged sword here is that while instances such as this force people to DIY to save money, it takes business away from those that do it for a living. I foresee this happening more and more. People are tired of being taken advantage of. There are many businesses that do try to take advantage of people charging stupid prices and/or service rates. These are the ones with flashy websites, splashy vehicle wraps, etc., thinking that the fluff will suffice to fool the customer for the prices they charge. People are getting wiser. And with the ever increasing content on the web advising/teaching the DIY'er on how to fix or repair something, it's only going to get worse unless these kind of companies reevaluate their business practices and the amounts they attempt to charge.

Also, people can blame those that post YouTube videos of repairs. I use them all the time and it has saved me $$$ over the years!

Way to derail the thread! :high5:

Anyhoo - I'm not sure why the lady on the phone didn't have a response for you - maybe she felt put on the spot. Hopefully, she can use that question as a learning experience to find out why they charge that much. I'm always prepared to explain our Service Fee.

How long does it take to install that filter? I'm just curious. Businesses - all businesses have overhead expenses (gas, maintenance & insurance on the vehicle, workman's comp, etc. not to mention the facilities and all that overhead to stay open) and have to pay the Technicians who perform the service. A service call *just to drive their truck off the lot* might be about $300.00. On top of all those items, I also make sure that our potential customers understand that we stand behind our work, guarantee our service AND the parts we install.

You're certainly entitled to shop around for the best deal for your money. Make sure you trust whom you have come out, and that they provide you value and peace of mind for the service they perform.

Or you can always buy the parts online and install them yourself.
After the last few weeks any local hvac tech is probably exhausted past the point of jumping up for a couple hundred bucks.
