3 Teens Killed By Carbon Monoxide - Nashville News Story - WSMV Nashville

MANCHESTER, Tenn. -- Three teenagers were killed Saturday night in Coffee County after their vehicle was stuck in the mud, and it apparently became filled with carbon monoxide.

Police said the victims, Josh Baker, 18, Kristie Burton, 17, and Alyssa Tucker, 15, became stuck in a mud hole after they were off-roading.

Channel 4's Chris Tatum reported that a friend who had been contacted by one of the teens found their bodies in the sport utility vehicle.

They weren't doing anything stupid or otherwise ignorantly dangerous. They were enjoying a 4 wheel drive vehicle for what it was made to be capable of and enjoying a day in the woods and mud, same as hundreds of thousands of people do on a daily basis, workdwide.

Only mistake they made was going out alone (one vehicle). And as one mistake usually leads to others, waited for someone to come get them, with the truck and most likely the AC running. It's common practice to not shut the vehicle off if the exhaust tip is submerged.

Folks that die of Carbon Monoxide poisoning, usually don't know it's happening. The get sleepy, and opt to take a nap.

The bigest trajedy in this will come after the parents decide to sue the property owners, which appears to be the state. No doubt, if this happens, more public land will be lost to offroading community.

The exhaust still exits the exaust tip, or any where else there may be a hole. Keeping the vehicle running keeps the water and mud from running into the exhaust pipe, which could cause problems later.

The instant case is a tragedy because it was an accident that could happen to anyone. There was no gross negligence, or absolute stupidity.
