Need a computer person

I have a HP Pavilion G4

I've been using a guy who was recommended on here and he has done ok but every time I take a machine to him I end up with more issues than I started with.

Most recently I got a disk read error. He said my hard drive was bad. Told me to get a drive for a laptop. I bought a SATA. He installed and said drive wasn't compatible with my machine (why wasn't I told this before hand). He gets a Seagate & installs then says he can't recover my Windows 7 OS. I buy a $200.00 OS. He installs. Asks if my machine always runs slow, I say no. He does some things and gets it running. Retrieves folders from my old drive & drops them on new drive.

Machine worked ok Yesterday except Firefox kept freezing up. I uninstall & DL new version.. I DL avast AV & yahoo messenger.

Today FF freezes again. I do a hard shutdown. Now machine takes 15 minutes to boot up. FF won't run.

I need someone who knows what they're doing. I don't want to mess with the kids at Best Buy. Recommendations?

I'm on a back up machine.... :tantrum:

It would be a hike for you but I use these guys...

Reliable, know what they're doing and came highly recommended to me. They resurrected my laptop (my baby) after a virus almost killed it. It wasn't cheap, but they did save all of my data (that was the expensive part).

I've yet to find a SATA drive that was incompatible with any SATA computer. Did he say why it was incompatible?

As far as the lockups, I'd be willing to bet he just loaded Win7 and used the default drivers, didn't bother to get the Win7 hardware-specific drivers for your laptop, if they exist. Need more specific model #.

# 1 Pro tip

purchase an external multi terabyte hard drive, connect to your primary PC one a week, drag copy over your most recent docs, or use the back up software that comes with the Drive ......

alternately get an online backup solution ..... but remember someone else controls your files

I have a really old Hotmail Account - comes with a free 25 Gb Skydrive account

newer members get 7 Gb in think ........ hot mail costs you nothing

most others only off a free 1 Gb

Actually he said it has an error 303? I dunno, I'm not thrilled with him right now.

I restored to a previous point on Friday and she's moving at normal speed so far. DL Firefox & now DL Avast.... we'll see.

Ok, Might have gotten a patch that it didn't like. If you get the same patch again it might do the same thing.

Keep us posted....

So far so good. DL yahoo messenger now.

Windows says it has more updates to install but it just did an update at 8:00pm. That worries me. The issues started after I did an update.

If it's a 'new' load of the OS, you don't get all the patches at once to bring you up to date. Way too many, and some can't be installed until after others have been, so it does it in stages. Might take 5-10 updates to bring it up to date. Which was also my comment earlier; it may have been an update that screwed you up. Only way to find out is to let it run. If it has issues, do a System Restore to just before those updates, then run each patch one at a time until you find the culprit, then turn it off or find out why it's a problem.

Sounds good. I'm going to create a restore point tonight just before I run these updates and shut down. Thanks for the input!

Doing ok so far. Just froze up for a few then cleared itself. Not sure what that was about.

OK belay that....just froze up for a few seconds when I switched tabs. It's either FF or FB.

Ruled out FB & FF.

It just randomly freezes every so often for about 30-45 seconds. Of course that's an eternity when you're sitting here waiting.

The fan runs continuously too. Something is using resources but task manager doesn't show anything unusual...
