Need Boxer Tips...

I have a WONDERFUL dog that is 3.5 years old...she's my heart and soul...a lab/pit mix that I adopted at 8 weeks of age (Well Pet Clinic). She's laid back and great with my G-baby (he's 11 months old) but she's also protective over him. She gets along well with almost any other dog...she's really laid back.

Ok so here's the situation...my Mom got a boxer a few months ago....she's 6 months old now and Mom just can't handle her...I told her if it didn't work out I would take her...she seems like a very trainable pup...and kinda reminds of reminds me of my dog as far as her personality...only in an energetic puppy form:killingme So, I have never had a boxer and just want tips from those of you have/had them. Are there any health problems specific to the breed? Anything I need to be on the lookout for? Any particular traits/characteristics? I welcome ALL advise and suggestions!!! She's was spayed last week and is up-to-date on all shots/heat worm prevention/flea & tick prevention.

My dog has been introduced to the pup several times at my Mom's house but not at my home yet...and she's not very fond of the pup...she has never hurt her...she just growls at her when she's in hyper play mode:duel: The G-baby gets annoyed and sometimes cries for the same reason...if the pup jumps and kisses too much.....still nothing awful and with time I think everyone would adjust. I asked my Mom to wait until the weekend and I will pick her up then...I want to be sure I have time to devote to her in adjusting to our home, my dog, and the G-baby and such. My dog is very well mannered and I never have any trouble out of her. HOWEVER, my Mom has not trained the pup much at all...and it's going to mean a LOT of work for me....I'm up for the challenge...and excited about having a playmate for my dog too....she's been lonely since we lost our dobie a little over a year ago:frown:

ok...enough info I think:whistle:...thanks for reading my concerns!!!

Boxers can have a lot of health issues, some hereditary.

They are a handful and require training and a TON of attention. They love children but tend to be very exuberant. Boxers are very "jumpy" dogs. The love to be "on" their owners and love furniture. A bored Boxer is trouble.

I'd love to help you..pm me with questions.

I'd like to know where she got the pup.

Jumping on furniture is not a issue...after all is is called FURniture right :killingme

Where my Mom got her is a HUGE argument between her and I...she got her at the farmer's market...some backyard breeder:eyebrow: I HATE THAT!!!! I DEMANDED that my Mom get her spayed...too many poor doggie now that don't have homes...that's why I adopted my dog...what a gem she is too!!

Thanks for answering my post...I knew that you would have some great advise...I'm doing some research on the breed...hoping to learn a little more before the weekend:coffee:

Ugh...I hope she doesn't have any heart issues.

I'd get her on a good food. Boxers have gassy bellies but if you give her a tablespoon of plain, low-fat yogurt in her food it will do wonders for her (and you :biggrin).

Like I said, I'm happy to help...just let me know.

Wow..thanks for the yogurt tip...I will start that right away. The vet gave her an okay...said she was a bit small...but looked good. I just read about the heart issues...I think another trip to the vet may be in thr near future..just to be safe.

I was also reading about the female boxers having issues with other females...that concerns me...do you think I may have problems with my dog and the pup down the road...or will I know fairly quick if it's going to be an issue?

Yep, female boxers can be a bit snippy and bossy with other dogs. But if you nip it in the bud, you should be okay. She may be just fine.

Thank you sooo much....I'm sure I will have more questions when I get her home!

Funny story...when I went to adpot my dog...my daughter saw the puppies and was trying to get me to adopt one of the hyper ass ones...then in one of the crates I saw a BUNCH of puppies and in the back was one that was lying down CHIILIN...I said "I want THAT one"...it was true love at first site!! Now we will have more energy in the house with the new pup to add to the G-baby....WHAT AM I THINKING LOL...I love my fur babies as much as the human babies tho!!!

Congratulations on the new Pup. Sweet of you to take on your Mothers dog. The new pup and the pup you currently have will get along in time. I had issues with my Mothers dog (Puppy Bichon) and my dog (Older Beagle, Humane Society). My Beagle came to learn how to handle the puppy and now they get along just fine. When my dog gets tired of her ears being chewed on and being trampeled, she just goes and finds a place to hide out awhile.

I don't know much about Boxers except my Mom and Dad had a Boxer mix back in the early 60's I guess. The mother was full boxer and as one of the people mentioned, "Jumpy", my mothers dog was jumpy. Could jump as high as the fridge. Tore up all the furniture, and ate like a horse. Not sure if that was something instilled in the Mother or the Father but could be something to watch out for. We put her down in 1977and I guess she was 18 at the time.

congrats on your new baby

:yahoo:Boxers are super smart and super active. They learn really quickly what you will tolerate and what makes you upset. Doggie classes are worth their weight. They make great family members and are faithful to the very end. When you are having a bad day they know. There is nothing in the world like a boxer hug and anyone who has one knows what I mean. I read about a study and it said the owners of boxers can actually tell their boxer by its smell sort of like humans. The vets office loves to see Mopar just so everyone can get a boxer hug. Just be patient with her remember she is a baby and depends on you to love and teach her how to become a good grownup dog. Go to boxerworld.com. They are great people and you can learn so much from them....
