Hi board. I am moving to the area for a year for a temporary job. I need some opinions on apartments and quick. In particular, I am looking for information on the Greens at Hilton Run as opposed to Spyglass Cove. I know that Spyglass has the better reputation--which is why I've already put a deposit down on an apartment there. However, I am a bit upset with them because I have just been to see the apartment today (I am not set to move in for two weeks, and I haven't signed the lease yet), and the one I decided upo

n (without being shown it) is just not appropriate. Can I just share, and hope it doesn't bore anyone? I haven't lived in an apartment in ten years, and have a cat who is used to going outdoors every day. My cat and I used to live in an apartment ten years ago, though, and there was a balcony for him to go outside--just enough to keep him sane, you know. My parents also live in New Jersey so he would (and will) be making frequent trips there, where he can go out.
When I came to visit here, I went to Spyglass right away. They showed me two bottom-floor apartments. I asked if my cat would be able to go outside (the area is pretty rural, without a busy road). They told me that this was not allowed, unless my cat was on a harness. Fair enough; I understand why they have the policy. I tried putting my cat on a harness once, though, and it did not work. That night, it occurred to me that if I live on the bottom floor, life will be a nightmare with my cat trying to get out every day. He and I would both be miserable. If we had a balcony _he could be let out on_, however, I knew he would be fine. Just like at my other apartment years ago, he would just be able to go out on the balcony for a bit, and since it was on the second floor, he wouldn't be able to get down. As I said, we had done this before. I felt strongly enough about the issue that I made the fact of having a balcony my main priority and requirement. The next day I called Spyglass and _explained the situation to them_, and they told me that they had an apartment with a balcony becoming available at the end of August--it was, however, a 2 bed, 2 bath (and I am only one person). In the end, this is the one I ended up reserving, even though it is more than I need. Then I went to see two other places--the Greens at Hilton Run and Abberly Crest. Abberly Crest was gorgeous! And the one bedroom apt. they showed me was actually quite cheap--$975 a month! It was, however, on the bottom floor. The Greens had a perfect apartment for me, including a perfect little balcony--but I had read SO many complaints on apartmentratings.com about them, and many of the complaints were about bugs/roaches! That's one thing I couldn't handle. The management there was really, really nice, but I've heard that bugs are usually present due to a flaw in the construction of the building. Plus, Spyglass has the beach...I adored the beach. AND it was highly recommended to me by someone who will be working with me next year. Since that time, several people have told me how nice the Spyglass complex is, when I have mentioned that I am (or rather, was supposed to be) moving there.
Today I am back in the area, and though I was busy during office hours, I went to peek at the apartment I had reserved at Spyglass. The balcony would be totally useless. The balconies go straight across, and have stairs right down to the ground. My cat would be able to walk right through the slats, or under the little fence-bit, and right down the stairs. Anyone could see that this would not work for my purpose. Perhaps if I DID manage to put him on a harness, I could let him out there, but I could have had a beautiful apartment for $200 cheaper if I had chosen to deal with this problem! I just didn't look specifically at the balconies when I was shown the ground-floor apartments at Spyglass, and I just kind of figured they would be like the ones at the other complexes I visited. I didn't think.
This is the only apartment that Spyglass has available for a while. I know from their website that the Greens has apartments available, which doesn't really surprise me, as I know that this is a less popular complex. I really wouldn't be shocked if they haBut I only know this from apartmentratings.com.
I am going to call The Greens and Abberly Crest tomorrow to see if either of these have apartments available with balconies (maybe something has opened up at Abberly Crest). It is a shame because I really liked Spyglass, but why rent an apartment that is double the size that you need in order to have something you can't use? I wish they would have explained that the balcony on my apartment there would not be suitable for my cat, since it would allow him to wander, and they don't allow this. But am I being a complete fool to leave Spyglass, which I know is lovely, for the Greens, which (so far as I know) has a not-so-nice reputation? Part of me hates to give up Spyglass, as I adore the complex. Perhaps I should just stick with it, and endure my cat's wrath or try to harness him again?
PLEASE HELP!!!I really hope I can get some help here. I would greatly appreciate any and all advice/opinions from my future neighbors in the Lexington Park area. I really feel in a bind, and obviously I've got to make this decision soon. THANKS!!!
