Need Some Advice

Well we bought a puppy (the puppy is 16 weeks) last Thursday at 1:00 pm. We noticed that on Friday morning is tail was bleeding, we took him to vet (emergency visit so you know we paid dearly for the visit) and she gave him antibotics and said it should close up 50% by Monday and to call her on Monday and if it hadn't closed up he would need stitches. Well yesterday came and back to the vets we go and come to find out the dog has no nerves or blood flow in his tail and has to have his tail docked (cut-off)!!! The vet said that this injury happened before we got him, since I had him to the vet within 24 hours of purchasing him and the wound was so bad it couldn't have happen within 24 hours.

So I have tried and tried to call the lady we got him from and she won't return my calls or anything. I have called since Friday!!!! What do I do...Is it just me or should the breeder pay the surgery fees, give me the money I paid for the dog, and give me the papers to the dog since I bought him as "pet only" I paid less not to get the papers...But one way of getting some of my money back is to breed him...

Any input anyone????

What type of puppy? Where'd you get it? Didn't you get a written health guarantee with the puppy?

And you don't breed a dog to get your money back. Sounds like you bought your dog from a crap breeder and your dog probably shouldn't be used for breeding either.

It is a pure bred black lab, very loving...I guess it is so attached to me because he is thankful I saved him...I got him here in St. Mary's and there was a 48 hour health guarantee but she won't return my calls!!!!

We weren't going to breed him until we found out that friends of ours have a pure bred female that are willing to breed. We bought him to have as pet only...

Is what she is doing fair or legal??? What do I do????

I would go to the house and contact them face to face, if possible. Does it say anything about the health and shots given before you bought the pup?

Please tell me that you didn't get the dog from some woman off of Budds Creek Rd, can't remember the name of the damn road, but it will take you out to Rt. 5 too. She is a scammer and her papers are only ACA, and it is a puppy mill she runs. If by chance this is the place, she won't return your call. JMO I really hope it was bought from a reputable breeder.

Good luck. I hope the pup feels better soon.

No offense but you really need to educate yourself about purebred dogs, breeders and becoming a breeder. You got screwed and it sounds like you might be looking to do that same to others.

Why can't you take the pup back to where you purchased it and confront the breeder?

If you are serious, just love and raise the dog and get him neutered.

I'm sorry for what you are going through but to even think about breeding this dog is reprehensible and your friends need to get their female spayed as well.

Take a look at how many labradors are always for sale, they are over bred to make a quick buck. Check the shelters, they are FULL of labradors, they are a dime a dozen. Of course if doesn't matter to the breeder (UNLESS it's a COE breeder) that the dog winds up in the shelter, or being bred with the pit down the road, after all they've already made their $300 per dog.

Again, I'm sorry for what you are going through, but it does sound like you got screwed, neuter it and love it and please don't add to the over population of dogs.

Black dogs are the last to be adopted, and yes, that's even true of black labs, there are too many of them.

You didn't notice your puppy had a bleeding ass when you picked him up? Sounds to me like your children abused the poor thing.

I meant about the kids.....

If the tail was somewhat healed it would be easy to miss, especially in the heat of the moment when everyone is excited about a new puppy and there's other pups to choose from. Not too mention the "breeder" may have had a good excuse if there was a little "cut" to it. Most people tend to trust the "expert" and that's what people expect from the breeder.

It looks like she took it straight to the vet.

Puppies spend a lot of time showing their bellies. Although not knowing what kind of wound we are talking about here, I would think it would be pretty hard not to notice over an eight hour period. If it suddenly appeared out of nowhere, I would suspect rough treatment  And while I could see a dog chewing on a 'dead' part if that is the case, they would have noticed it over the course of the eight hours I would think. Plus, aren't many puppies too plump to reach their own butts? Anyway, my first thought would be that he did not deliver with this condition, and my second thought would be that if I did not injure the pup, someone else in the house did.

Maybe it was another pup in the litter. I've seen dogs split their tails open by wagging them hard against a wall.

I've seen them split their tails open as well. I've never seen once cause a laceration that needed stitches due to chewing was my point. That theory just doesn't make sense. Stiches are given to deep wounds. Gnawing does not cause such wounds. Gnawing causes more of an abrasion.
