Need some help understanding the forums.

I have been hanging around just reading threads for a while and I'm having trouble getting the program. I was hoping for a locally-based forum where people could interact on things from world politics to pets.

When the long term regulars post back and forth, that's the way it seems to be. But, when someone new comes on to post, especially with a question, it's so frustrating to see how they get attacked.

Why the cold welcome foe newbies? I'm sure my green is history for this, but I felt like the question needed to be asked.

Example...

Someone just asked about the ride along for teenagers as a favor to help a friend, and got sliced pretty good for it.

An example on my part was my username and a number of accusations in the beginning that I had signed up to advertise. Feel free to read through my posts, I just wanted to meet some new people.

That's fair enough. IMO most of you have a pretty great sense of humor, and I believe that you have to learn to laugh at yourself. But, it can get pretty offputting sometimes.

Watch out for that Kwillia person. She's pretty nasty. :ohwell:

I read both his threads and in between the ribbing posts he did get the advice he needed...

It depends on how they introduce themselves. Like the gal that got on wanting us all to email her information on some cyberbullies that were jacking up kids that weren't even hers and she had nothing to do with? I saw her coming a mile away and posted a basic safety warning, then closed the thread to new posts. She emailed me a nastygram and called me a few names (I wasn't mean to her or rude or anything), so I figured, "Okay...."

Lots of newbies get on here and are warmly welcomed. Just not the ones that introduce themselves by saying SoMD sucks, or we're all a bunch of morons, or with some personal tale of woe about how their boyfriend kicked them out.

And don't worry - I'll hit you up with green to make up for any dip that smacks you with red.

Point taken, and I apologize if I'm wrong, it's just how it came across to me.

It's called hazing and it happens in a lot of different places. A lot of forum members say hi and welcome when a newbie intros themselves, others hold back and wait to see how they will turn out. And others give them crap just to see what kind of personality the newbie has and what type of responses they get back. Again, a form of hazing / initiation, but once the intro dies down, usually the member is accepted. No biggie. After all, if a newbie can't take what's dished out or makes no attempt to fit in and have fun then it is reasoned that they take the forum/internet way tooo seriously.

Sometimes a "newbie" is not really new, just a recycled form member. And that opens them up for "attack.

Sometimes a "newbie" comes on swinging and attacks from the first post, which gets everybody on the bandwagon of attack the "newbie".

And sometimes a "newbie" comes on that just rubs people the wrong way. just like irl when people meet.

Remember all the old forum members were new once too. I think we have all gone through the hazing to some degree. Hope that helped clear things up. And I gave you green.

They actually do that for my benefit. :blushing: We get a lot of business owners on here that try to side-step the "No Advertising" rule by pretending to be someone recommending their service or even just blatantly advertising. Forum members are supposed to just report them, not attack them, but sometimes they get carried away.
