Need thoughts on a 'problem'

Makes a noise in the motor. See post #1. Whatever it is, is still making noise, but I'll try a few things to make it better.

Seafoam is a liquid you add to the gas to clean the fuel injectors and valves.

Marvel Mystery Oil is an old product, been around for eons, and can be added to the oil, tranny, gas, just about anything, and it helps clean and make things work better. Kinda smells like mint.

OooOooOooooOh... :jet:

I will have to try them.

Curious to see what mechanism you come up with for dosing Seafoam

I'm just going to connect the vacuum line to the shutoff valve, then a piece of hose into a jar with the seafoam. Crack the valve and let the engine vacuum pull it in slowly. Maybe do it in spurts, add a shot, close the valve, add a shot, etc...

I think I'm going to build a "permanent" one into my beater car.

Put a Tee in the main line, shutoff valve and barb fitting coming off the top.

Then, run a small, clear plastic tube, and funnel to the barb. That way I can pour it in at the rate I want, or submerge the tube in the can and adjust flow with the shutoff valve.

I don't plan on doing this more than once or twice. Besides, I'm thinking the seafoam will destroy the vacuum line. It's not fuel rated. It will probably get replaced after doing this.

Gotcha.

They recommend doing it once a year/every 15,000 miles.

I think you'd have to have it submerged in the stuff for it to eat the PVC away. Fuel line is just hose rated for pressure.

Either way, let us know how it works out!

In My Opinion
I dump a can of SeaFoam in my tank every oil change.
don't know if it does any good or not, but it doesn't seem to be hurting it any.

Never done it. So I guess I don't know either. One of us is not spending $ on it though.

Ok, before anything else, let me apologize profusely to the poor guy on the bicycle that I smoked out on Town Creek Drive. :ohwell:

Sorry about that.....

I made an adapter to go from the brake vacuum line to a piece of tygon tubing, to the cutoff valve and into a can of Seafoam. If you just crack the valve, it doesn't really pull it in. Have to open the valve full wide for a second, then close it, and do that a couple of times until you hear the motor rpm change. Let it settle and start to smoke.... :coughcough: then do it again. In between I raised the rpm to about 1500. Makes a hellofa cloud!

Sucked the whole can in. I only noticed one change, but it's significant. When the smoke was first coming out of the tailpipe, I noticed a single cylinder puff. Pretty regular, making neat little smoke rings. By the time the can had been consumed, the puff was almost completely gone.

Took it out for a ride to finish clearing it out. Again, sorry to the bike rider. It was nasty. Over the bridge to Solomons for dinner, then back home. It's still smoking somewhat. Have to go to Dahlgren tomorrow morning, so I hope by the time I get there and back it will stop smoking. Time will tell if the noise is gone.

EDIT: Oh yeah, minor side effect. Check engine light came on, won't go off. I suspect it was from when I had the vacuum line open. My buddy has my ODB reader, so I can't reset it at the moment...

Can't just disconnect battery and reconnect? Also I always thought smoke rings or a sucking back in of exhaust was a sign of a bad valve seal.

It makes sense.
many years ago my grandfather used to smoke cigars. He always blew smoke rings.
He died because of a leaking heart valve.

The check engine light cleared itself this morning. :yay:

Has to do with timing of the exhaust pulses.

GWGuy, do you have dual exhaust, or modified exhaust?

Stock single.

It wasn't as bad as sucking the paper in the pipe, but you could tell the valve wasn't sealing. I'm suspecting a sticky valve, which could also account for the tappet noise. The treatment seems to have helped that.

It still made noise this morning, but the engine seems to run much smoother.

I guess that's a plus.

Sorry it didn't clear it up, I guess it's time for a leakdown and compression test.
