National Night Out

I noticed a sign at the entrance to Drum point for a Neighborhood night out on Tuesday in CRE at the club house. I guess that means outsiders are invited. Anyone know what this event is about?

National night out. It is a crime prevention kinda thing. You get out and show your support for crime prevention in the neighborhood. It is done annually.

I saw a news piece on National Night out. I talked about how when it started it was to get neighbors out to meet each other and look out for the neighborhood and each other. People had block or street parties in front of their homes. Now towns have events and draw people away from their homes. I would think that if you are a crimminal, National Night out is a good time to go into a neighborhood. I think it should go back to the block and street party concept.

Criminals have taken advantage of this before. Now NNO tells you to turn on your lights and lock your doors.

The NNO website says "To have blockparties, cookouts, front porch vigils, flashlight walks, & parades."

How did it get turned into a time to draw citizens away from their homes?

I don't think they are implying to get the homeowners away from their homes. Just hang out near their home, hang out with neighbors, talk with police officers that come in the neighborhood, and such.

No you misunderstood...They are saying for neighbors to stay near their homes. But in my county they are encouraged to meet at other locations.

I don't think that is a good idea. What county and who is telling people to do that?

Calvert...My neighborhoods national night out is at our community center, combined with the neighborhood next to ours. This is the same for many neighborhoods in the county. My neighborhood has a great set up. lots of activities and they work very hard to make it a good time.

I read thru all the posts and visited the site but I’m still not sure how NNO benefits the folks. It sounds like lots of rhetoric about “crime is bad”, etc.

We already know that crime is bad. How about NNO making suggestions on how to deal with it. I’ve never owned a gun but perhaps NNO could suggest a good weapon for home defense.

The idea of a block party/gathering is really not complicated, but sometimes people just need motivation.

Wow – fortunately, Wildewood is demilitarized so I’ve been sailing along weapon-free.

National Night Out is a chance for people to come out and meet their neighbors.

I hope you will try to come to the NNO at CRE. It's a lot of fun. There's something for everyone. Oh... and you get hot dogs and soda too!

Becky – I lived in Calvert (Lusby) for the last 7 years. I’d have been all over your NNO in Lusby except for the fact that I now live in St. Mary’s.

Anyway – Southern Calvert needs to accept it’s growth!! The anti-growth Clark needs to deal with it or else he needs to be voted OUT!!
