Blu-ray.com - Netflix Goes Blu-ray Exclusive

The popular online video rental service Netflix has announced that they have decided to support Blu-ray exclusively for high definition movie rentals. Pointing to the Warner Brothers exclusivity announcement as the main reason for the shift, Netflix will no longer purchase movies in the rival HD DVD format, and once the life cycle for those discs has ended, they will no longer stock the format for rent.
I'm glad I bought a PS3 instead of the Xbox 360 add on. This is pretty much the nail in the coffin for HD-DVD:dead:.

Yeah, Amazon had the 360 HD-DVD add-on for sale at $75.00 (probably to empty the stock).

Well, start watching those sales ads for a good deal on a Blu-Ray!:yay:

I'm wondering if there will be a 360 add-on for Blu-Ray. I would assume that there will be some time soon. Hell, somebody has probably already hacked one to put a Blu-Ray onto the 360. I know they've hacked the HD DVD add-on to yank the drive and put it in a computer.

I highly doubt Microsoft makes a drive for blu ray. With the HD downloads at the marketplace there really isn't a need for one. I think Microsoft added the HD drive just to initially compete with sony.

The hd dvd add on is recognized by vista as a hd dvd player. You only need the right software to run it. Well, that is pretty much pontless now I guess.

There are rumors that there may be a Blu-Ray add-on for the 360. If ya can't beat 'em, join 'em!

Ok, I'd be surprised if Microsoft doesn't package a Blu-Ray add-on. It's not like it would cost much. The package is designed. The guts are designed by someone else. All they need is a driver which probably already exists. So, why would they not want one? If they stick with HD DVD for games that need capacity higher than normal DVD, the price will begin to rise as the industry moves to Blu-Ray. Plus, you won't have the ability to play Blu-Rays like the PS3. They'd lose market share.

Actually, I take it back. They will probably sell an add-on combo drive that does HD-DVD and Blu-Ray. These drives are already available for PCs.

Yeah that's true.

I just don't see a demand for it yet. If the PS3 didn't have a blu ray player, microsoft would of never wanted a HD DVD player. I have read that microsoft left it open to where they could develop one. I just think Microsoft will focus on Marketplace and gaming.

Msg Netflix Sent to Subscribers

Just received this from Netflix:

You're receiving this email because you have asked to receive high-definition movies in the HD DVD format. As you may have heard, most of the major movie studios have recently decided to release their high-definition movies exclusively in the Blu-ray format. In order to provide the best selection of high-definition titles for our members, we have decided to go exclusively with Blu-ray as well.

While we will continue to make our current selection of HD DVD titles available to you for the next several months, we will not be adding additional HD DVD titles or reordering replacements.

Toward the end of February, HD DVDs in your Saved Queue will automatically be changed to standard definition DVDs. Then toward the end of this year, all HD DVDs in your Queue will be changed to standard definition DVDs. Don't worry, we will contact you before this happens.

Sure am glad I spent $300 on that HD DVD player last August and bought all those HD DVDs :)

HD DVD drive $119.99, movies up to 50% off - Xbox 360 Fanboy

As if the HD DVD news couldn't get happier today! After Microsoft slashed the price of the HD DVD add-on for the Xbox 360 only days ago, Amazon has undercut the MSRP by a cool $10, offering the player for $119.99. The savings don't end there mind you as a slew of HD DVDs have been discounted to up to 50% off the regular retail price. Is this another sign that the high-def format war is winding to a close and Amazon is letting go of its inventory or are they trying to make room for that Blu-Ray add-on that we've heard Microsoft talk about?

Best Buy's pushing Blu-ray to the front - Engadget HD

The HD DVD camp, still reeling after losing support from Netflix this morning, may feel flattened as Best Buy has announced it will officially promote Blu-ray as the HD format of the future. Starting in early March the store will showcase Blu hardware and software on its shelves and website, and switch from its current neutral stance, to recommending Blu-ray to any customers that ask. While "an assortment of HD DVD products" will remain, a vote of confidence from major retailers, following the majority of studio support, will make it impossible for red to recover.

And the hits keep coming.

With all this bad news about HD-DVD, I've been seriously considering getting a HD-DVD player.

The players themselves have seriously dropped in price. The one I've been looking at is $152 on Amazon....and comes with 7 free movies. The cheapest Blu-Ray is $400. Not only that, but the HD-DVD movie prices are getting slashed in price...with some available for $15.99.

I could really stock up on HD movies at a bargain price. It's not like the player and the movies are going to stop working once blu-ray is officially anointed the chosen one. and once that actually happens, the movie prices will be slashed even more.

Hopefully by the time HD-DVD is completely extinct, the blu-ray players will be more reasonable.

I backed the wrong horse. Last time VHS won out over Beta because the price of the machines was way less. With Blu-Ray players being twice the price of HD-DVD machines, I thought the same law of low price would prevail. NOT!

Regardless, Blu-Ray players are going to have to come way down before I "invest." $600+ for a machine to watch a DVD is absurd.

Man, I seem to have allowed an entire piece of technology to fly past me. No clue what an HD-DVD (player or disc) is. I've seen blu-ray advertised but it's always been too expensive so I don't look further.

What's going to happen to me? I just have my DVD-RW drive on my pc and regular DVD players. My sons have the PS2 and the Xbox 360 so where do I fair in all of this? TIA :flowers:
