Netflix Goes Blu-ray Exclusive

Pookieboo!!!
I backed the wrong horse. Last time VHS won out over Beta because the price of the machines was way less. With Blu-Ray players being twice the price of HD-DVD machines, I thought the same law of low price would prevail. NOT!

Regardless, Blu-Ray players are going to have to come way down before I "invest." $600+ for a machine to watch a DVD is absurd.

Look harder. There was at one point Blu-Ray players around $300.

Hmmmmm...Sony or Toshiba. Of course Sony would win the battle.

Man, I seem to have allowed an entire piece of technology to fly past me. No clue what an HD-DVD (player or disc) is. I've seen blu-ray advertised but it's always been too expensive so I don't look further.

What's going to happen to me? I just have my DVD-RW drive on my pc and regular DVD players. My sons have the PS2 and the Xbox 360 so where do I fair in all of this? TIA :flowers:

You will be safe. The industry will continue to sell DVD's. It will be years before a Blu Ray player is in every home.

Saw one at WallyMart for about $375. Don't remember who made it. I was tempted to buy it, but I think I'll wait a bit longer for the price drop and new competition/features.

None of those device will play either a Blu-Ray or an HD-DVD. Posts above suggest there are add-ons for the Xbox. The Blu-Ray and HD-DVD players will be backward compatible with older DVDs so you can still play what you have as well as the newer HD disks. There isn't any need at this moment to get an upgraded player, but eventually the older DVDs will be phased out and you'll have to upgrade to play newer disks.

:yeahthat: You could also get a drive for the computer that plays both HD-DVD and Blu-Ray for under $400. Throw it in an older computer and have a dedicated entertainment PC. :yay:

BTW, what I learned from the VHS/Beta fight was to stay out of it until a clear winner emerges. Then continue to stay out of it until prices drop.

Considering the high price of the players and the higher price of the movies, I doubt either format is going to replace standard dvd's anytime soon.

I suspect it will happen more quickly than you think. The price to RENT is really no different, and people are buying HD-TVs in record numbers in light of the 2009 mandate to upgrade. Most will consider the cost of an HD player to be minor next to the price of the TV and surround sound system.

That's what I'm planning on doing with a 3 yr old HP desktop. Just checked Best Buy, they have 2 internal players for under $200.

Movies are not that high. I just recently bought a couple for $19.99.

From what I've seen, new movies typically cost $10 more on blue ray then standard dvd. I bought one blue ray movie awhile ago to compare the picture quality and there was not enough difference for me to continue paying 50% more for them. And I do have a hdtv. A 40inch sony bravia lcd with a hdmi cable connected to my ps3.

Does your tv support 1080p? I can tell a difference on my TV.

I would have to ask what movie you are talking about. I rtecently purchased the remastered full metal jacket on blu ray. This movie is over 20 years old and looks better than any dvd I have ever viewed. It looks better than any upscaled dvd I have ever seen. I have a 37" lcd and the difference between 480p and 720p is stunning. There is a major differnce if the studio encoded the movie properly. Buy anyone of the Pirates movies and you could tell.
