Just got this e-mail

We are separating unlimited DVDs by mail and unlimited streaming into two separate plans to better reflect the costs of each. Now our members have a choice: a streaming only plan, a DVD only plan, or both.
Your current $9.99 a month membership for unlimited streaming and unlimited DVDs will be split into 2 distinct plans:
Plan 1: Unlimited Streaming (no DVDs) for $7.99 a month
Plan 2: Unlimited DVDs, 1 out at-a-time (no streaming) for $7.99 a month

Your price for getting both of these plans will be $15.98 a month ($7.99 + $7.99). You don't need to do anything to continue your memberships for both unlimited streaming and unlimited DVDs.
These prices will start for charges on or after September 1, 2011.

nothing unreal exists
They are trying to separate themselves from the DVD portion and push more towards Instant Streaming as their main business format.

I've been able to get films from RedBox the same day or before Netflix ships it to me. Lower cost ($1 per DVD per day, $1.50 for a BluRay), no limit, have as many out as you want. Quite often get 2 for 1 or freebies, never get that with NetFlix.

I'm probably going to drop NetFlix anyway.

They may be just hedging their bet.

Netflix's future in streaming video is also uncertain.

Without net neutrality, some big ISPs (Comcast, Time Warner, etc) will bypass Netflix, make their own deals with the studios, and set up their own streaming services which will not be subject to the data caps.

We currently have Netflix but I never to seem to find anything, movie wise, I want to watch. The movies are not all that new. My kids will watch back episodes of shows.

They're out to get us
it doesn't sound like the Netflix DVD deal is worthwhile. I'd stick with streaming.

I know nothing
We got a netflix membership as a gift one year. It was nice to have, but we didnt watch that many movies. When the time came to redo our membership, Netflix tried to change the membership fee's and charge us more. So we cancelled our membership.

For a couple months after that, we got various letters and emails telling us to come back to Netflix, which included a lower monthly fee than the original fee.

I tried calling today to find out if they're going to increase the movies that are instant streams. The selection right now is okay for watching some old movie but certainly not what is available on DVD. Lines are flooded and I got a hangup recording 3 times before I gave up. I'll bet their customer service folks are hating life today.

Netflix will be releasing earnings later today, we'll see what they have to say about the price increase during the conference call. With all of the money they've been committing lately for streaming content rights, they had to significantly increase revenue somehow - and I guess they don't think they can increase subscriptions fast enough.

At some point, they had to either go all in the streaming (by shelling out lots of money to expand their library and charging more money to pay for it) or abandon that effort, which would leave them stuck in a model that can only last so long (i.e. mailing out actual DVDs). I'm still not sure how to size up their prospects long term, but we should have a much better idea next quarter when we can get a better sense of how much the price increase is affecting subscriber churn.

Netflix is reportedly in discussions now to add stream-able content from Dreamworks.

they seem to be very willing now to make some deals, I told them I've been a customer since 08 and have never been able to stream movies, and asked for a credit on my bill.. they gave me the credit. when the credit runs out I'm still going to cancel. Now with all the kiosk rental machines its cheaper to get a movie that way

I cancelled my NetFlix. I can get the same movies from RedBox for $1/day/disk, no limit. I don't stream, so it's no big loss.

I would do that but I know I'm not very good about returning things on time (ask the library, )and I'd end up paying more that way than with Netflix.

There's never anything I want to stream on Netflix. My kids use it though.
