As this does sound really nice, I am a family oriented individual and can not see myself away from my Wife, daughter, and other relatives for 4 years. I know that does not seem like a good excuse, But knowing my luck, I would get sent over seas and never see them again. ( I know sounds really bad, but that would be my luck.)
It doesn't quite work that way. Separations from family can happen but they are for relatively short durations (6 months to a year typically), and are very infrequent. If you get assigned to some place like Germany or Italy or Japan you can take your family with you. And you can still continue your education at those colleges since UofM and many others extend their services to military bases overseas.
You certainly don't have to make excuses to not join. It's a choice, and I happen to think it's a good one. The sacrifice you might make for a short 4-6 years (in the grand scheme of your life) to get your training and education could pay to be invaluable in the long run.
