New baby gifts

A couple of friends of ours are having their first baby soon. A boy. And I'm asking for some advice on what to get them for their baby shower gift.

They prefer organic and all natural items, are making their own baby food, are having a diaper service take care of their diaper needs, and say they already have all the clothing they need.

So.....now I have absolutely no idea what to get them. They haven't picked a name yet so a personalized gift is kinda out. We've all encouraged them to use a registry but I think it makes them uncomfortable. They haven't really added anything to it.

Any suggestions? I'm not a parent so I'm asking you - as parents, what was super super helpful, not just for the baby but for you as well, when you had your first child?

I believe another friend, the only other one with a kid, is making them a big package full of disposable diapers and baby food/formula stuff because she thinks it'll be most helpful, despite what the parents are planning for.

Maybe some classic children's books? Since they seem to be all set on baby stuff why not get something for the new mom and dad? A gift certificate for a massage or a cleaning service might be nice.

Gift card to Baby's r Us.

Or if they're insisting on cloth, diaper service for a month.

I can't wait to hear back about how the making their own baby food goes.

Are you a BJ's Wholesale member? They have an absolute fabulous selection of books! If these people believe they are going to stick with cloth diapers and making their own baby food they will surely believe they are going to have plenty of time to sit and read to the baby! They will love it!

not impressed
We make our own baby food, really is not hard at all. Steam veggies, puree when young chop when older, freeze. Now that she is older she eats what we eat for dinner. We also have chicken and steak that we cook in bulk, chopped, and frozen.

For bebe carriers I love the Ergobaby ones (with infant insert for when they are itty bitty). Spendy, though!

Clothes in larger sizes. For the shower everyone always gets NB and 0-3 month sizes. Get some all-weather type clothes for 6 month and up.

Bebe socks with rubber grippie things on the bottom sized for when they start learning to walk (I'd estimate 12 month size).

CJ's diaper rash cream (can be used with cloth diapers! Desitin, etc cannot)

Rockin' Green laundry detergent (for cloth diapers. I know they're going to use a diaper service, but handy to have just in case.)

Diaper sprayer (it's a spray nozzle thing that hooks to the toto so you can hose out the nasty diapers)

Bigger size hooded towels (bigger size as in non-infant)

California Baby shampoo/baby wash, diaper area wash (These can be purchased a good deal cheaper at Target, etc)
