New baby gifts

A couple of friends of ours are having their first baby soon. A boy. And I'm asking for some advice on what to get them for their baby shower gift.

They prefer organic and all natural items, are making their own baby food, are having a diaper service take care of their diaper needs, and say they already have all the clothing they need.

So.....now I have absolutely no idea what to get them. They haven't picked a name yet so a personalized gift is kinda out. We've all encouraged them to use a registry but I think it makes them uncomfortable. They haven't really added anything to it.

Any suggestions? I'm not a parent so I'm asking you - as parents, what was super super helpful, not just for the baby but for you as well, when you had your first child?

We make our own baby food, really is not hard at all. Steam veggies, puree when young chop when older, freeze. Now that she is older she eats what we eat for dinner. We also have chicken and steak that we cook in bulk, chopped, and frozen.

They already prepare their meals at home and use lots of fresh ingredients. I think their intent is to just prepare the baby food as they prepare their own. I wouldn't personally know how well it works but it seems in theory like it wouldn't be too much of an imposition for them.

Guys, this is really awesome and I appreciate it! I went from having no clue what to get straight into having to narrow down my choices. This will be a big help to our other friends that are clueless like us, too!

I made my own Baby Food back in the 70's. It was easy then too. I froze it in Ice Cube Trays, and then put it in Zip Locks. When I'd go out, I put the food that I wanted in the Diaper Bag, and then put it in warm water just before serving. At times, I used the Broth to put in Bottles for in between feedings. I decided to do this after my first Child choked on a Banana Stem that was in a jar of Gerber's Baby Food. Luckily, he was OK.

Along those lines, I received some hand made flannel burp cloths as a gift. They are awesome! Way thicker than what is available at the store, more absorbent and cuter =)
