Boy and I took a kayak from McIntosh Outfitters down to the Leonardtown wharf yesterday and the optical zoom function on my Minolta Dimage Z2 died :bawl:
Been looking at replacements and the FUJIFILM FinePix S1000fd is looking like the front runner.

My search criteria have been a good optical zoom and a view finder (those seem to be disappearing). A Pixel count of 4 meg is sufficient for an 8x10 print so that's been my minimum.

Any comments or suggestion?

The 1000 is nice but it has no image stabilization. I'm glad mine has that. My last camera didn't and that's one of the reasons I got rid of it.

That's why I want a view finder. Much less shake than when holding the camera at arms length

I have a barely used Panasonic DMC FZ8 That has 12X zoom that I could be persuaded to let go cheap. I upgraded to a DSLR.

Oh and it also takes the SDHC cards too, up to 4GB

Very nice :yay: That would be great if it had a view finder

I love my camera (Casio, don't ask what model.. :lmao:), but am totally lost without the viewfinder. The LCD is worthless in the sun and trying to compose a good shot.

 If you hold that camera up to your head, it's a whole lot more stable than holding it at arms length. My Minolta has all the info available on the LCD screen in the view finder.
I think the Minolta will migrate to the handlebars with a Ram mount.

We had two Fujis, which seemed to randomly trash the SD cards, so we stopped using them.

There, now that Ive got that on topic stuff out of the way, how did you like the Outfitters? And how long did the trip take? I plan on doing that run with the kids.

Very nice folks :yay: I hope their business succeeds.
Only took about 5-10 minutes for them to show after we called from the wharf.
Check the tide charts for Leonardtown if you can adjust your travel time. I was pretty much locked into Sunday morning so we went at low tide and had to push in a couple of spots. Another 6-12 inches of water would have eliminated scraping bottom and would have allowed more area to explore.
Paddling down took less than 2 hours.

PM me with what you are asking for this camera. Looks nice. I have a DSLR too, but was just saying to hubby that I wanted a decent smaller one that I could throw in my purse or backpack when I don't want to drag along the whole camera case. TIA!
