New Furniture??

Just remember that furniture is something you don't want to buy all the time.. Better off spending a little extra now for good stuff instead of turning around in 5 or 6 years and buying stuff again.

Raleys is really hit and miss.. Need to take a careful look at it, it may or may not be real wood.. Their "high end" stuff is really low-mid grade stuff, so you need to take extra caution.. And definately hit them when they have a sale, otherwise they are overpriced for what you get.

Thompsons is a strange place.. Either they don't know what they are doing, are they hope the customers don't know.. They like to put something nice next to something that is far less in quality, yet only charge a little less for the "lesser" furniture.. I assume this so they can say "Well, for only X dollars more, you can get this one.." If that doesn't work, they make a killing off the "lesser" quality piece..

Good luck with the shopping! It is always exciting buying new furniture!

Well, I sure wasn't trying to give Katie bad advice. My sister in law furnished my neices bedroom from Thompson's for $1600.00 and it's beautiful.

Well, I think it really depends how often the furniture is used. I got married in 1990 and bought a living room set at that time. It looked brand new till my youngest son started walking in 1997. I think 5 or 6 years for a living room set to last is pretty good if you have kids.

Katie just some words of advice. Stay away from burlap type material, it picks and if you have pets, scotch guard it.

I totally agree with Yakky about IKEA - it's an awesome store. We bought a huge armoire there about 6 months ago that we use as a storage unit in our utility room. Just be aware that most of it you need to finish it and assemble it, but it's VERY easy to do. Check out their website at IKEA - you can get them to send you catalogs, too.

If you're willing to drive a bit, try the stores in Delaware, since they don't charge sales tax at all. I bought my bedroom furniture from a place called Furnitureland in Delmar (about 10 minutes from Salisbury). Fantastic selection of real wood furniture. A couple of miles up the road is a HUGE place called Johnny Janosik's. There's also one in Dover if you don't want to drive that far.

Locally, we found the quality, selection, and price of Value City Furniture to be the best value, albeit most of the wood used is pine. They're on-line at Value City Furniture, but I really like to browse their store in person. I was disappointed in the quality of the furniture at most of the chains like The Room Store. I've bought furniture from Thompson's (I have a Catnapper chair that is AWESOME) but like others have said, it can be hit or miss - you've got to inspect it carefully and really know the price of things before you go there.

Good luck in your hunt!

Ditto on Thompson's. And, don't pay attention to the stickers. It's like car shopping. Just ask for the real price, and negotiate from there. The other nice thing about them is free delivery and haul away.
