New Gear - Where??

staring into the abyss
I'm looking for gear (gloves mainly, but a jacket might be next) and the only places I've found locally are Atlantic, the HD stores and the newer H/K/Y/S place north of Prince Frederick. None seem to carry much of what I'm looking for, which probably falls in the Cortech, Fieldsheer and similar lines.

I've gone online, but I'd really rather try something on and get a feel for it before going through the hassle of shipping and returning a jacket. I might order online if I want a different color.

So, any ideas? I'll do a road trip if they have a great in-store selection.

What kind of jacket/ gloves are you looking for??

I'm thinking Power Sports.. or the place in VA, on the way to Fredericksburg.

Olympia, Aerostitch.. Cortech, can be found at either Morton's in Fredericksburg or Bob's in Columbia..

Jackets: I'm thinking textile, mostly because the leather stuff tends toward fetish gear or race wear. I'm not really interested in advertising for Joe Rocket or Yamaha, although I like some of their styles and fits, nor do I care to look like I'm racing Laguna. There are a few nice, neutral leather styles out there but the cost is pretty high. The textile Cortech and Olympia seem like they offer more options in the armor and liner department for the price, plus the venting might get me through the early summer.

Gloves: Icon and Joe Rocket have some I've tried and liked, just not enough to buy. I'd like a bit of gauntlet and some protection, nothing outrageous. I just can't find anything else except a few Olympia that I wasn't thrilled with and stuff that seems awfully cheaply made.

I'll check out New Enough, but I'd really like to try something ON and make sure it fits. The last jacket I tried on would have given me serious plumber's crack. I'm 6', so it isn't like I'm a giant. If Morton's or Bob's has a nice selection (versus two street racks next to the BMX and watercraft gear), I'll give them a look next time I'm out that way. I'd just like to find a store where riding gear isn't an afterthought.

Last gloves I got from New Enough were to small. Called them and had a new pair in a couple of days and a pre-paid shipping label to return the other pair.

:yeahthat: if it's the place behind the Sheetz(maybe WaWa) right before the Rt. 3 bypass

the last time I went down there, they had a big selection of gear

Fredericksburg Motor sports

Bob's and Morton's should be doing their Spring open houses pretty soon. When they do they have an abundance of clothing (lot more than usual, and factory reps on site). I only know of these two, but I'm sure all the other dealers are doing the same.

Morton's it's a HUGE event, usually >400 - 500 bikes and riders show up, so they put their best foot forward and have a good amount of products on hand.

Check out Held gloves. They offer great protection, durability and don't look like racer-wannabe gloves.

For jackets, I'd got leather but that's just my opinion. Vanson is great and pretty plain looking, but you're gonna pay for it.

I've shopped at newenough and have been very happy with their service.

Wore leather for years, but the new textiles are a lot more versatile. Waterproof, body armor, removable liners, vents, zillions of pockets and when it gets dirty, chuck it in the washing machine.

My First Gear, Kilimanjaro has so many pockets I lose stuff in my jacket

.

I have an Olympia Mesh jacket and i LOVE it.. i wear it year round. With the liner in it it's waterproof but HOT! SO I have a seperate one piece rainsuit to wear in the summer time.

With the liner in it it's more than warm enough to wear down to 20 degrees, and without the liner it it's VERY comfortable up to 100, moving it feels like you are wearing a t-shirt, it only gets hot when you're standing still in traffic.

The armor is all removable so it's easy to wash (twice a year whether it needs it or not!).

I've had it three years now (this will be my fourth summer) and it's not really showing any signs of wear (granted I haven't gone sliding down the road in it either).

It pretty well armored, and all the important "friction"? points are well reinforced.

Gloves: I have Marsee perforated leather for the summer. Only down side is they offer no armor protection. Comfortable, wearing VERY well other than fading on the backs from the sun.

I had Olympia summer gloves that had leather palms and inside finger and thumb, but like a mesh spandex on the back. They have 'armor' over the knuckles with vents, and a pad across the back of the hand. They were EXTREMELY comfortable, by far the most comfortable glove I've worn, but they didn't hold up well, barely made it through one season, but they were only about $35.
