Hey - has anyone been to that new gym in San Souci? Maximum Fitness? I went in there today and the place is clean, everyone is nice and its a HUGE facility. Prices aren't too bad, either.

Anyone hear anything, good or bad about the place? I am thinking of joining, but want to know what its like before I spend good money on a membership.

I just wanted to know what the "talk" in the area is all about - good OR bad! I'm trying to decide which gym in the area to join. I've heard good and bad about both.

Just trying to make a good decision

I go to Maximum Fitness. I personally think the place is great. I was a pro-fitness member for years, and needed a change of atmosphere. Maximum Fitness has all shapes and sizes of people. The equipment is new, and very well laid out. There is no wait for a cardio machine at all.

Only thing that needs work is the group fitness classes, but it is growing.

GIGI6,

what "talk"?

what are YOU actually looking for in a gym?
nice staff?
clean bathroom?
perfect air circulation?
circuit machines?
free weights?
machines?
bow flexes types?
personal trainer free of charge?

I really didn't have to look for a gym. I go to the gym on base for free. And they've got everything I need. Don't need a personal trainer to show me how to exercise.

This place is very friendly, with not just the typical weight lifters in there. There are all shapes and sizes in there. They have a great daycare program for the kids, and it is always well staffed. In the women's gym area, there is a window that you can look and see what the kids are doing.

nice staff?
The staff is very nice, and never had a problem with them.
clean bathroom?
VERY clean.
perfect air circulation?
Always nice and cool. The only room that was a little stuffy was the spin room, but that since has been fixed
circuit machines?
Yes
free weights?
Yes
machines?
Yes
bow flexes types?
No
personal trainer free of charge?
First 3 visits are free.

Where do you work? No, I'm not being nosey, but if you work on the base you can probably pay a lower rate to use the base gym.

Probably a typical Southern Maryland gym complete with a donut bar.

Hey 404! Give us a little credit here! We don't serve donuts in our gyms, just like people in Wheaton don't rush to the emergency rooms to remove the sticks from their azzes!

Of course the equipment is new, the gym is new. That is one of the things that bothers me when people talk about that gym. Did everyone expect the equipment to be old? And there is people of all shapes and sizes at Pro Fitness as well.

I was a member of Pro Fitness for 4 years, so it isn't like I didn't try it there. I was very active at the gym either, I didn't get a membership and use it once in a great while. It was the same crowd of people, and I made the choice to be in a different atmosphere. I wasn't comfortable there anymore, so why would I pay 50.00 a month for a gym that I didn't enjoy going to anymore, and that I didn't feel comfortable at.

It is all about personal choice on what you want out of a gym. I feel very comfortable at Maximum Fitness there isn't anyone sitting there sighing and looking at her watch while I am doing my workout. The free weights are on the totally opposite side of the building, so you don't hear the guys grunting when they lift up a heavy set. The spin room, the bikes aren't making enough noise, that they sound like they are going to take flight.

I wasn't trying to be mean to you or pick on you. I have heard other people make the same comment about the equipment being new and everything in the gym is fresh, so on and so on. Well of course it is, they just opened. Pro Fitness has taken steps in buying new equipment and having the other stuff repaired.
Your right it is one persons choice of where they choose to workout. If Maximum was was in my daily travels I may consider it, but Pro Fitness is what works for me. I've been a member for 5 years, and go at least 5-6 days a week, so I'm getting my moneys worth. It is nice to have a change in atmosphere once in a while. I just put my headphones on and mind my own when I'm in there. It is very disturbing to hear the guys grunt.
I hope Maximum works for you and you enjoy the scenery!
