My boss, who has much faith in me :yikes: has asked me to set up her new Gateway PC in her office.

I've just plugged it all in and am about to get it up and running and thought I'd ask if anyone had any recommendations for me.

I'm installing her Quickbooks software and I have Office 2007.
I'm going to put a music player on the desk top for her and load some of her favorite music on it.

I'm thinking I'll put the AVG free version on there too since these things come with trial versions and I always use free stuff to keep from paying for a bunch of crap.

Anything else? It's just used for accounting as far as I know, but I want to make it handy for her and give her something entertaining becuase she basically sits behind a desk all day.

Make sure you run all the Windows Updates and install the latest service packs.

Check the time the computer is set to do Windows updates. If the computer will be powered off at night and it's set to do uptates at 1 a.m, that's not helping anything.

I don't think I'd be willing to protect an accounting computer with something like AVG. Tell your boss she needs to buy some AV and firewall protection such as Microsoft One Care.

We've always used AVG. I use it at home because basically no program covers your butt completely and pay money for it seems stupid when you can get the basic protection for free.

I"ll mention it to her, but I've never liked Norton or McAffee. I"ll look in to some other options.:yay:

What about networking? Does the computer need to be set up to a server? If every other computer is (assuming that the business has a network) everything such as printers will need to be mapped.

Don't put anything on there that has an expiration date on it.

It's just aggravation for her if she's using something and suddenly, it won't work anymore, or it keeps giving her popups asking her to register her product.

Take AVG off, put Spyware Terminator on. It acts as a fully functional virus scanner and firewall, for free.

Put this on her desktop: ReignOfBlood.net - A free vampire based online game (vampire mmorpg, vampire game, free vampire game, vampire rpg, online vampire games, online vampire game, vampire online game) and tell her to please click. This is the game I play to keep me from hanging around the forums. If you sign up to play, I get points and power, which keeps me playing longer.. Do us all a favor and help me stay the hell off the forums. :lmao:

I may just do that!:jet:
I never even thought that using AVG was a :nono:
OOPS!

I'm not a computer person:shrug: I've never read one of those licensing agreements.

It's not like we're a real business anyway:lol:

It's a wireless internet connection shared with one other computer, but nothing else is hooked together. So I don't guess mapping will be required.

I don't guess it's any more legal to install my own Office 2007 program on there either. I don't care. What are they gonna do, sue me? I got nuffin!:nomoney:

Office needs to register itself. If it finds a duplicate copy, you will either have to procure a license for the 2nd copy or use it in a very degraded mode.

Try Open Office. It's free. OpenOffice.org - The Free and Open Productivity Suite

I have my Office loaded on my home PC and my laptop. For 150 bucks, I'll put it anywhere I please.

This lady isn't gonna be saving the economy.

Laptop= 800 dollars +
Home PC= 700 dollars
Software= 500 dollars +
New office PC= 1000 dollars

My bit for the economy is secure.:yay:

So she bought the wrong license?

This is what she said "I have my Office loaded on my home PC and my laptop."

She can load Office on three of "her" PC's these days. Now if she loads it on her boss's PC, then I'm with you, and she's a crook.

But what if:

We share the computer for work and pleasure.
I made the purchase.
I used my Best Buy card.
I set it up.
I installed my software on it.

That's a lot of what if's and I still don't have my question answered.

I'm so bored with smarmy MPD's and flaming a-holes:yawn:
