Nick's in Waldorf

Yesterday I purchased my groceries, wine, trash tickets, lunch sandwiches, lunch meats for the week and 10 pounds of hamburger

My plan was to make meduium rare hamburger sliders for lunch and spagetti for the week. When I opened the package less than 24 hours after purchase from Nick's in Waldorf I was shocked to find it all brown inside.

I returned the package to the store and the meat manager was called to the front where he said the meat was fine, no problem just serve it. I told him I would never serve meat that was brown to my family and had never had this problem with their products. The meat manager refused to stand behind their product.

I have been a customer since the days in Hillcrest Heights in the early '60's. I now find after more than 45 years that they do not stand behind their product. This is the first time I ever had a problem with any of their meats. I tossed the meat in their trash can and left the store. I am very disappointed since I always go there to purchase all the meat we eat in our family.

I will never step into Nick's again. I am sad but when a small local company doesn't take pride in their product then I cannotsupport them anymore. I am open to suggestions for a new reliable place to purchase my meat products for my family.

Sounds like you don't know much about red meat.
You will go back.

Shame on you for posting something like this, when in fact you're the one that doesn't have a clue what your talking about. They were right, you are wrong.

:YAY:

Meat is normally brown when not full of blood and color.

You didn't sniff it did you? Bad meat will make you :barf: from a good wiff.

If it smells like meat, it's still meat.

If raw meat is bad, it will smell horrible. Did you smell it?

Regardless of whether the meat was bad or not, you've been shopping there for 45 years have one problem and quit? You are a tough customer. I'm sure they will be happy to have you shopping elsewhere. Good luck with the chains.

Red meat turns brown in the presence of oxygen, if you want to turn it back red again put it in a plastic bag with a piece of dry ice, the CO2 will cause it to turn in about 8 hours.

Another thing, red meat doesn't start out that way, it's actually closer to purple in color.

Actually, the new packaging for ground meat, it's packed with CO to keep it looking red.

Modified Atmosphere Packaging | Carbon Monoxide in Meat Packaging

Fact Sheet—Modified Atmosphere Packaging— Carbon Monoxide in Meat Packaging
A Safe Packaging Option

Many food products—including some meat products—are packaged with a small amount of gas to maintain their fresh color and extend shelf life. From salad mixes to bottled water, the use of this modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) technology has been used safely for years.

Red meat tends to change from a bright red color to brown or gray after being exposed to oxygen. This is a natural change in color but does not mean that the product isn’t fresh or edible. The product is still safe and wholesome despite this change in color. By adding minute amounts of carbon monoxide at levels approved by FDA and USDA to red meat packages, products like ground beef can maintain their natural appearance throughout their shelf life.

I hate to say bad things about local businesses. The last time I bought a 10 pound bag of burger from Nick's (PF) it smelled rank and I tossed it.

I gave them another chance last week (after a year) I like the custom cut steaks and the sausage.

I will never buy burger from them again.

On a side note, when I get meat freshly ground, it is red all the way through.

I only buy burger this way now. I pick the cuts and have the butcher grind them in front of me.

Brown is yuck.

From the USDA website

"Why is pre-packaged ground beef red on the outside and sometimes dull, grayish-brown inside?

Oxygen from the air reacts with meat pigments to form a bright red color which is usually seen on the surface of meat purchased in the supermarket. The pigment responsible for the red color in meat is oxymyoglobin, a substance found in all warm-blooded animals. Fresh cut meat is purplish in color. The interior of the meat may be grayish brown due to lack of oxygen; however, if all the meat in the package has turned gray or brown, it may be beginning to spoil.

How should raw ground beef be stored at home?

Refrigerate or freeze ground beef as soon as possible after purchase. This preserves freshness and slows growth of bacteria. It can be refrigerated or frozen in its original packaging if the meat will be used soon.

If refrigerated, keep at 40 °F or below and use within 1 or 2 days."

I find it hard to believe that Nick's would even HAVE old ground meat---they move a lot of it....last month I got some steaks from PF Nick's that did not turn out right....they admitted the meat was sub par and replaced my whole meat bill!!!

Sorry I agree w/ OP. If you buy meat from some place and the next day it is brown that is nasty. I would never cook brown ground beef :dead: That is horrible that they wouldnt replace or refund the money.

I dont care if the air causes it to turn brown. I wouldnt cook it. It would be thrown in the trash.

This isnt the first I have heard or experienced Nicks poor quality of meat/seafood.

I was catering a party for over 100 people and made cream of crab soup. I purchased the crab meat from Nicks. When I placed the first container in the soup the smell was putrid. So I smelled the other containers and they all smelled horrid. So I had to drive all the way back to Nicks get my $$ back go somewhere else and buy more crab meat and ingrediants for the soup. The manager said they had a few other complaints about the crab meat so it must have been a bad shipment :eyebrow: I will never buy seafood from them again.

Meat turns brown naturally..I have no idea why somone would try to return or throw away meat that looks like it is sup to? If it smells ok, I cook it. I would be lucky to be so rich I could throw something perfectly good away because it wasn't the color I wanted it to be.
