No-kill shelters hurtful to animals?

If only animals were equipped with some sort of claw or teeth shaped defenses, they could probably be released where they could be free and hunt for their food - if only there were such a places on earth....

Nah - it's better to just gas the ####ers or keep 'em in a cage until they rot to death.

There are statistics out there that show that domestic animals released into the wild can't survive. I know personally of city dogs gone feral who can kill birds, squirrels, cats but cannot get through the skin and hair.

The problem is not with the shelters, but with pet owners themselves. I have had many cats during my lifetime and when I could not take care of them any more due to having to move and no one wanted them there, I found them good homes, not the shelter. I also have had the cats fixed so no more population. I have also had several puppies and dogs and we asked the new owners to please have them fixed, I do not know if they did, but at least I tried. Where I live none I have bascially adopted three outside cats. The previous owners just left and never tried to find them a home. I have had them fixed and shots are up to date. People need to realize that animals need care and that just walking out on them is inhumane. Cats and dogs can also get HIV and transmitt it to other cats and dogs. Being a responsible pet owner is the key. I guess I am just a pet lover. I also have birds in my home and three fish tanks. Animals need space and keeping them caged up is cruel. Would any of us like to be caged or left behind, I think not.

I remember just before I started my rescue I was looking for a cat. There was an ad on there for free kittens. This one lady said that she has a new litter of kittens and another on the way with more to come.

I was just speechless

we have become a disposable society. I have made few committments in my life except for with my pets- who were all rescued and unwanted. They brought- and the current ones bring joy to my life that few people have been able to do (although I AM happily married!)
Too many people can leave their pets behind without a conscience or give them away because they are moving. What BS! Some people should not be allowed to *own* animals.
I Attend a lot of local animal rescue events and donate much money to the cause; particularly to spay and neuter. I admire the pure and sincere dediaction of the volunteers and plan to go full tilt when I retire.

I run a rescue and it breaks my heart sometimes when we have to rescue hurt or nelgected ferrets. People thought they were cute at petco but had no idea they need attention and love so they stick them in a cage and nelgect them.

Unfortunantly, I believe that shelters that put the animals asleep are a necessary evil, as well as horse slaughter is a necessary evil. We do not have to ability to house all theses cats, dogs, and horses that irresponsible owners continue to breed or do not neuter and spay, I would much rather see them put to sleep then to see them dead on the side of the road. Which unfortuantly most of them end up. Both of my cats are rescues,my ferret was also adopted and one of my horses is a rescue that I saved last year. Actually I rescued 3 horses and found good homes for 2 of them and I kept one.

People think animals are so cute and cuddley, But most have no idea the responsibility it takes to have these animals. I am a very pro active horse advocate. If it were my choice we wouldn't have slaughter, But the harsh reality is were r u going to put all those unwanted horses that r not safe to be around or that need medications non-stop??? If I wouldn't have stepped in last year the three horses that i saved would not have made it through the winter. Both of my cats were rescued when they were kittens, both were left alone to die because they were to young to fend for themselves.

I know of one organization that doesnt believe in No-Kill shelters

I find it amazing how both sides can always find a PETA quote that "proves" their point.

Nothing personal, just an observation.

(I'm staying out of this argument...)

my GF @ the time took one in, the family was so freaked out after one of the kids got nipped ( operantly no one told them, Ferrets especially new young ones nip @ fingers until taught not to bite) they were throwing the food through the cage @ the animal and it never got out .......... we called her Chewy and took her in .... she was a handful to say the least ......... but warmed up to a loving home

From original post: "In a week's time, 1,004 dogs and cats were brought in".

So after 1 year, that would be 52,208 animals. That would have to be a mighty big shelter.

Unfortunately, that is precisely why there HAS to be shelters that humanely euthanize. While we can go into a million ways that the problem could be lessened, right now - the problem exists... and animals must be euthanized. There is just no other way to deal with the numbers.

I'm in total agreement. I get Charles County animal control/people on my scanner and the number of animals they bring in daily is unbelievable. I've owned pets most of my life and only once turned one in. I didn't have the resources to take it with me and had to ask a neighbor to do it for me. Took me a while to get over that.

There are shelters in the area that are renowned for warehousing unadoptable animals.
I know specifically of a rottwieler that was dumped at our shelter on a saturday in june and it took AC over 8 hours to get there to pick him up. It was over 90 degrees that day and the poor dog was freaked out and vicious behind the wire of his crate. None of our volunteers could safely handle him so we had to leave him in there all day waiting for AC. We did pour water on him to cool him off. But anyways this dog was pulled from tri-county by another group and last I heard the dog was still vicious, noone would go in his kennel, had to use a catch pole to handle.
As much as I love animals and will root for the underdog almost everytime, there comes a point where adoptable animals are dieing literally everyday because this one vicious dog has little to no hope of finding a home, so while he takes up this kennel for 5 months, how many dog died because of it. There has to be a line drawn somehwere.

If this group does not have the resources to train this dog and make it adoptable, they are not doing what they should do. Rescues believe in the "humane" treatment of animals and the most humane thing for a dog like this would be to humanely euthanize him and release him from his demons.

There are worse things than death to the animals. Being warehoused in a kennel with minimal exposure to people, other animals, love and attention, then sometimes the most humane thing to do is to humanely send them to the bridge. I'm not saying that about all dogs that are kept in a kennel atmosphere, some can live quite happily like that waiting for their possible home, but some it is by far more cruel to keep them.

SPAY & NEUTER!!!!
Please support local groups that offer low cost spay and neuter programs!!
It is heart breaking to go to shelters and see the amount of animals put *to sleep* and I know it is necessary but I still don't have to like it!

QUIT BREEDING!! I wish people would realize that some -and certainly not all-breeders are doing it for the profit and could care less about the animal or the adopter of the animal. If I were ever to consider adopting a pure bred dog- and I certainly have no reason to- I would research and find a breeder of show dogs. I have met many and most seem to know what they are doing and do care. I would not consider buying from someone that advertises they have many breeds for sale & take VISA/MC. Nor would I go to a farmer's market.
