NO RIDGE CARNIVAL

I hear the Ridge carnival is cancelled and replaced with some type of " one day social gathering". SAY WHAT? I hope they weren't scared off due to what happened in Hollywood. Everyone knows the shooting in Hollywood was an isolated incident. If it was in Lexington Park, it would make sense to cancel it. Everyone knows that a carnival is far from some type of "social event". The story is that the rides were not available so it had to be cancelled. To placate people, they plan to hold a one social event. "LOL!" Good grief. Funny how this happened right after the Hollywood incident. No mention of it beforehand. AND no problems getting rides any previous years. Just all of a sudden out of the blue. Next year they will probably say, well, our social event went so well, we will do it again in 2023. I wouldn't be a bit surprised!

Something going on, a carnival in my hometown was also cancelled due to rides not being available this week. I've never seen that before either, I've seen it shut down due to safety concerns when one ride almost fell over.

No really, they could not find a vendor to provide rides. This was decided before the Hollywood incident. They are doing one weekend of food and games Sept 8th - 11th. I’ve already purchased the bikes they will be giving away for the kids each night. Come on down and enjoy the food!

I wonder if these guys are going out of business, it can't be a particularly thriving business model can it?

Rides are the lamest part of the carnival anyway. I go for the corndogs and funnelcakes.

Not true (depending what you consider a social event). These small fire department carnivals are for the community. I always saw people I knew. Did you ever notice how many people are hanging out just talking?
Yep, our county fair is well inside our city limits, it has free concerts every night for it to be a social event for adults and familys. A huge part of our town can walk to it.

Maybe Maryland should rethink some things when even the carny businesses are leaving.

well, just like a horse whip, I think Carnivals have passed their time.
Yeah, in earlier times, especially in rural communities, they served a purpose to give celebration for a good harvest, fun for families, whatever. It was clean fun, much like a County Fair.

Fast forward to now. Dilapidated rides, suspect workers, rising fuel costs, rising INSURANCE rates, all play a part, We've certainly seen rides breaking, lawsuits by victims. Now, shootings, gang wars.

It stands to reason that Mayors, County and State politicians don't want this happening. Their law offices have to be conscious of liability matters too. So, poof!
Cancellations, no permits.

nailed it. Growing up a farm kid in a very rural area, carnivals were everywhere and the county fairs were the highlight of our year. Practically every week during the summer there was a carnival somewhere within driving distance. And there was little if anything else!...so of course the carnivals were popular and well attended. Put the last cow outa the dairy barn at 7:30..rush to the house to get a shower and clean clothes, and hit the road to the nearest carnival, grabbing some beer along the way. Wash, rinse, repeat, all summer long.

Funny thing...we never rode the rides. But I couldn't imagine a carnival without them. We were there because all our friends were...played the games..drank beer..hung out.

Insurance costs are killing, and have killed, a lot of recreational activities, not just carnival rides.

The Great Frederick Fair ....where I first caught glimpse of a world out there that was far stranger than I'd ever imagined up to that point. (We didn't even get a TV set until I was 9 years old....a tiny screen in a big cabinet that apparently only came on when Lawrence Welk was playing...)

I never thought of that! They cant suspend my tags, they're expired DC plates my fren gave me anyhow!!!!
I'm trying to see how long I can get away with running "Virginia Permanent" trailer tags on my ole pickup truck... If I get busted, I got a set of "Farm Use" tags fer it.
