Noise question

Tragic Goddess

Tragedy becomes me
I have a Dell and it seems to pick up random transmissions. What I mean by this, is it will make static, humming noises whenever a plane flies over, traffic goes by on the road or somebody's Nextel bleeps or before the phone rings. This weird hum crackle noise is not always present. Just when something disturbs the "force". I have turned my speakers off and the volume to mute on the computer but it still occurs. Any input from you various wise computer sages?

electric motors all generate an electromagnetic field and your laptop could be picking these up.
Might be a bad ground cnnection allowing this. Does it do it both running off the batttery and while plugged in? If only while plugged in does it do it only when plugged in at certain places, i.e. at work but not at home. To pick up interference from a plane would require a decent antenna such as the wiring in a building.

If it's new and does this while running off battery power, take it back.

It only does it at work, and when I am plugged in to the monitor set up they have here. You think it could be the plugs/cables?

Sounds like aps is right and it's an issue with a bad ground. Have your IT guy check it out and have a phone ready to show him an example.

If you've ever watched "Revenge of the Nerds" you'd know violence, crime and murder are NOT what we spend our time thinking of..
