Norton or McAfee?

I've always used Symantec products but I have to tell ya - McAfee security suite is the bomb! I got it with my new computer and it's got all kinds of cool things that Norton doesn't.

So here's the dilemma: I just bought the Norton upgrade for my home computer. Should I send it back and get McAfee or should I go ahead and install it? Which one do you all like best?

I have Norton Internet Security 2005 on my PC. I just upgraded to it a couple of weeks ago and I love it.

McAfee has never given me anything but trouble in the past. It came installed with a free trial with my new laptop, so I'm going to give it a whirl again and see which one I like best.

Vrai, I have always used Norton. Our IT Engineer at work swears by it and doesn't care much for McAfee. Maybe McAfee has really improved with the latest version you just picked up.

I'd still stay with Norton.

Neither. PC-Cillin or other Trend Micro product. So much better!! Those others always have issues.

also, they have an online virus check you can run if system acting up and virus scan wont function (a sign you been hit). Really helpful! (For free...even if you dont own the product).

But their free online scan only tells you that you have a problem....want it fixed? You have to subscribe to them & shell out the cash.

I tried McAfee once & had trouble. The help desk tech who refunded my $ actually recommended Norton. Told me McAfee does have problems & that HE had Norton on his home PC. I'm very happy with Norton.

Okay, sold. I'll keep my Norton for the home computer - that way I can compare it to McAfee at the office and see which one I like best.

Thanks for all the opinions!

Going against the grain, but I dumped Norton a few years ago, and have used McAfee ever since...

Wrong. With the online scan it will tell you how to correct the problem.

McAfee and Norton are ripe with problems on both sides. I used Norton and it missed stuff on three different occasions (twice it quit working all together... program messed up... only one of those was a virus fault). It was on those occasions it would have been helpful to have an offsite scan to be able to use since I couldnt check with my own. That is how I discovered trend-micro. Their product also works better, is less intrusive, and much easier to work with. Yes, everything stayed updated when I used Norton.

Also, as a standard feature and not extra, trend micro's pc-cillin includes spyware, email, firewall, etc protection and it also includes the means to monitor networks (without paying more). :yay:

This is just some of what the tech-heads say on why drop McAfee and Norton and use something like Trend Micro. You can find a hundred more articles of the same out there. Just MHO. Oh, and a special where you can get it for $15.

Also, if you want to get them, there are updates pretty much daily. I have gotten updates as many as three times in a day.

I get a subscription to McAffee with Verizon DSL, and have Norton at work... Prefer McAffee.. BUT also installed Yahoo's Spy-Ware on top of the pop-up blocker offered with DSL...

Better than McAfee, Norton, Symantec or anything I've found is AVG. This finds stuff that Norton and McAfee can't begin to even detect.

Best of all is the price....absolutely free. (Although it does have versions for sale) it can be downloaded for free from the site www.grisoft.com .....

Happy New Year!

FastCarsSpeed

Come Play at BigWoodys
McaFee Enterprise Edition is what I run as its free from work.. Have not had a virus in prolly 3 years atleast. I have them all set up for automatic updates.. Even on my mail server this thing goes into my mail server and deletes all Virus attachements without issue.. saves my users a ton headaches.

As an IT engineer... Norton blows away McAfee... Especially if you have a managed client through Norton :) hmmm :)

After reading this thread I decided to try PC-Cillin. I have been using Norton and had just updated my virus definitions and run daily scans. BUT--- PC-Cillin found 3 virus that Norton did not. I have since ditched norton and installed PC-Cillin on my computers.

I run NORTON on my machine here, and downloaded AVG to test it.. and it found SO FAR.. 120 bad files trojans and viruses that Norton didn't pick up.. what's REAL funny, as AVG is finding them, NORTON splashes a screen saying "VIRUS FOUND" .. like NO CHIT.. AVG found it, now you want to take credit!!
