Norton or McAfee?

Service Pack 2 is a nice feature of an upgrade that M$ came out with, but also Norton I would have just to be safe. Nothing with running extra protection on your end. Viruses are coming out everyday and getting worse.

Trend Micro has a firewall in their Internet 2005 program. It also has virus, spam and spyware software plus URL filters. What I love is it will scan my email as well. This is especially good because I use Thunderbird and not Outlook which most others will scan.
Norton missed a lot of stuff for me.
If you are looking for a free firewall you might want to check out Zone Alarms firewall. It is pretty good.

I have Norton SystemWorks and I love it. I'm able to do system maintenance the way I like it, and can find and fix most problems (I'm running Win 98 on my big machine and XP on my laptop).
That said, I purchased the Norton Internet package (I've forgotten the name of it). From the time I downloaded and installed it, that mess acted like a virus or worse. Shutting down some of the more aggressive and intrusive features didn't help. Contacting Norton to get a refund didn't work (no response). No phone number for a help desk, no nothing.
The uninstall was not completely successful - it even reset my system clock to next year, making my subscriptions and definitions and everything out-of-date. All my e-mails were dated incorrectly, etc.
My wife's machine, after I uninstalled the package there, now comes up looking for some of the Norton files every time she boots up. I've done everything I can think of besides wiping out the hard drive and starting over.

If I had to choose between only those two, I'd take Norton, specifically Norton Systemworks. McAfee is such a performance hog and there are some many different variations of McAfee to choose from that it's confusing to know what you need. If you do decide to go with McAfee, DO NOT buy the firewall software. It's worthless and causes more trouble than any other software I've seen. FYI, you may also want to consider some of the free anti-virus programs out there like AVG.

What I like about AVG (unlike Norton and McAfee) is it doesn't load a bunch of programs everytime you boot and it is free (although I did finally upgrade to AVG Pro - felt guilty using it for so many years and ZoneAlarm Pro - has a anti-spyware routine). And, it takes a much smaller foot print (memory).
Every few months or so I'll jump over to a few online scanners...

I've used both on my home PC; I have Windows XP and had problems with both. Performance was slow, lock ups, etc. I switched to Zone Alarm Security Suite and so far it works great. The only thing that's not as good is the spam filter; it takes some getting used to and it's not as efficient as Norton.
I liked AVG so much I bought the full version. It's a lot cleaner and, like Micro said, doesn't take 6 years to load when you boot your computer.

Question: If you have more than one (I have McAfee, then downloaded AVG for free), is it normal that your PC slows down? Mine seems to take forever even to shut down or restart.
Maybe I should drop McAfee and just keep AVG, I'm tired of being asked if I want to renew (only two options) now or later every few hours.
