Ah, that makes sense...I usually turn my computer off (you must either leave yours on, or have the subscription version I'm guessing). So even though I can have an update scheduled with the free version, it won't update until I turn it on. :stupid: Yeah, I downloaded the free version on a whim when I started getting tired of the McAfee reminders. :jameo:

I turn my system off when not in use. When I boot her up - I normally check for updates (in case it was off during the scheduled check). You made a great choice in free Virus programs. My first AVG download was July 2001! I've never had a problem.

mine runs 24 X 7 X 365 .... the only time I shout down is every 3 months to blow out the dust ..........

I've heard that it is actually better to leave them running 24X7 then shutting them off and on (saves the power supply, etc.). I just can't bring myself to leave it running all the time.:killingme:killingme:killingme

Sorry, I sure didn't mean to offend you.

I've spoken to a bunch of people running Norton (and McAfee) and 80%+- of them have had problems (at one time or another) with the way they burrow into the Operating System. They all go nuts when they decide to move to another package and then start the ongoing battle of removing all the code (ADD/REMOVE just doesn't seem to do it successfully). IMHO - Norton and McAfee are no different then the way AOL "takes over" a system.

Again, sorry for offending you.

You didn't offend me I just thought you had the :killingme smilie auto-pasted into your posts since it shows up so much.

Symantec is the industry standard. Since I work for the gubmint I get it free. And it has worked fine for years, even through several upgrades.

I'm resurrecting this thread to possibly help someone NOT go through what I've been through for the last 2 months with "smell" computer's tech support. After reinstalling my entire operating system in April, the problem of intermittent scrolling went away for a week but then came back. I was then told many wrong things like: need more memory, settings are wrong, using too much memory space, it's your anti virus program, etc. After installing a new $42 RAM memory card, I found out that it was still messing up! Was I pi$$ed?!! Especially since my warranty is up in a week. So today, I finally got someone who knew what it was and it now works fine. Apparently, I had "too many programs running in the background". He went into the "run" program and "msconfig" and shut down a bunch of programs and it seems to be doing great. Hope it lasts. FYI and thank you all again who had suggestions.

You're lucky if it has only been that long for you. After buying my XPS less than 3 yrs. ago, it took me a year and a half of complaining and them switching out parts for them to finally send me another XPS just like the one I had. I got that in February, well last night my firewire connection just quit working. I tried many things I know how to do to remedy it but to no avail. I called Dell and after they troubleshooted for a while they decided the motherboard has to be replaced! I have had this laptop 4 MONTHS! Here we go again I said. I asked if they could just give me a credit towards the purchase of a new system, they said they could not do that. I'm like wtf??? I will NEVER BUY ANOTHER DELL AS LONG AS I LIVE!!!!

I have been a loyal customer of theirs for 9 yrs. and this is the thanks I get. I have spent THOUSANDS of dollars with them and they can't help me out! I say F*&% them and the horse they rode in on!!!! :burning:

I feel your pain MB. After 3, 4, 5, 6 calls, I asked for a supervisor and it sounded like the same guy. They all have the voice of the geeky guy in the old "Short circuit" movie. They told me that my warranty is up in a week and I said I will not extend it. They wanted almost $300 to extend it and I said no because this is my first and last Dell! The problem is that I own 2 Dell laptops and the other one has been flawless... Oh well, go figure right?
And they'll never part with YOUR money once they get it. You already know that so I make it a point not to give them another penny unless they fix the problem NOW. The other problem is which company can you go to and get good English speaking tech support? If Obama gets in, the only thing that will change is that it won't be a long distance call anymore. They'll be right here!:jameo:
