I am game and like to live dangerously. :yahoo: Can't be worse than a winery road trip with tornado warnings, could it? :lmao:
I forgot about that! :roflmao:

Maybe next weekend? I'm rolling up to Bethesda tomorrow and it's supposed to start raining on Sunday through part of next week...

I didn't because I was driving! :jameo:

Sounds good. I am busy Saturday and part of Sunday myself. It will be interesting to see the changes firsthand.

I watched the show and am still not a Gordon Ramsey fan. I don't think the owner was either after he splattered him with a rotten apple. The kitchen was horrifying to say the least. And KNOWINGLY serving putrid food (slimy oysters, anyone?) took the cake! :dead:

I must say the dining area looks great after the renovation. Whether or not change has truly taken ahold, especially in the kitchen, is still TBD. The change happened back over the summer (July I think) so I looked at recent reviews. Some were positive but several said it was "same old, same old" and basically you can't put lipstick on a pig. :sshrug:
Not surprised considering the career cooks there (30+ years) couldn't even do something as basic as roast chicken after being personally trained by Gordon. To be fair, it's a super fast demo and not a class or anything but if after 30+ years experience and getting hands-on with an elite chef and you still undercook chicken there's no hope for you.

I think a lot of that is drama for the show.

Maybe so, but those cooks might never get another cook job after the way they were portrayed. Would you ever hire Anthony? Assuming that the producers didn't pay them a ton for appearing, being on the show wouldn't be worth the damage to their career.

This restaurant sued in 2018 over a similar portrayal from 2011...

Wow, I have eaten at that place years ago, as well as another NO restaurant featured on his show called The Old Coffee Pot. And now Lowery's. :jameo: I'm not dead yet!

This show is akin to "professional wrestling". It's all pre-scripted. Does anyone really believe that Gordon rolls in and in 24 hours replaces an entire kitchen and dining room, sight unseen? I don't think the local Home Depot had what he needed in stock at 2am; he had a truckload of pre-positioned hardware and wall coverings and a team that knew exactly what was going to happen.

As far as the chef that left... if it were your restaurant and your 30 yr employee with kids just couldn't cut the pressure of the entrees, wouldn't you offer him a position in the kitchen just doing salads or veggies? They let him walk? No one stopped him? Naw, he wanted to retire, this was his scripted "out".

Yeah, I'm a cynic.

Sorry, got distracted by a long phone call and he wanted to talk.

@RoseRed and I decided to take a ride and check it out. Got there about 11:45 and the parking lot was pretty empty although the sign said they open at 11:30. Hmm...not the best first impression but we forged on ahead.

We go inside and were greeted promptly by the hostess then seated right away in the near empty restaurant. We were in the main dining area that underwent the "transformation" and it looks better, except for the old and stained ceiling. The rest of the restaurant is still very dated and worn out looking as they moved the old dining room furniture into other areas. The menus were single double-sided sheets of paper with a limited menu. We both decided to get the crabcake sandwich, which came with bacon, mozzarella, lettuce, and tomato on a brioche bun. We both skipped the cheese and RR opted to just get the patty and bacon. The side was fries with no other options. I opted to get a bowl of what was billed as "spicy gumbo" while she got a salad with blue cheese dressing for appetizers.

To say the food was mediocre and lackluster was an understatement. Let's start first with the gumbo. No real spice that I could discern, very overcooked frozen vegetables, and sausage that appeared to be chopped up lil smokies like the cocktail wieners. Her salad looked better with fresh mixed greens and two HUGE chunks of cucumber. I passed on the offer to have them.

Before we were done with our appetizers, the main event arrived. On first glance, mine looked good but a ginormous bun was hiding the crabcake, which was small. Digging in, there was lots of filler and no discernable spice. Bland, bland, bland. There were also two slices of bacon, which were good, and had more flavor than anything so far. The bun was soaked in some sort of butter concoction, so I opted not to eat it. The fries were good, but as RR said, obviously fresh fried from the bag.

All in all, a very disappointing meal and I doubt they will survive much longer. Pretty much Mr. Ramsey slapped some lipstick on a pig and whatever temporary good that was instilled has since worn off.

But we had a lot of fun chatting on the drive and enjoying the day together. Thanks for driving, too. :zoomzoomzoom:  :smooch:

Too bad, but that seems to be what happens with a lot of Gordon's pet projects. Like you said, lipstick on a pig. People don't change overnight just because a celebrity yells at them.

I'll add that the bathroom was clean! The salad dressing was good. And Little Smokies belong in appetizer dishes. And, the place had filled up before we left. And like I said, you can't season crackers. I have no reason to ever go back.

I also didn't speed as much as I usually do and we stopped at the Buy My Chit store!

Great day! Thanks for coming along! :)

Yes, the bathrooms were clean but horribly dated. Our server was good, too, and very attentive. The Little Smokies in the soup really was just bizarre. And yes, more people came in, some local, when we left around 1:15.

The store was stuffed to the rafters with, well, STUFF...to the point of overload, but it was just fun browsing and we left empty-handed. And thanks for the side tour of Port Royal. Too bad it had started raining again as it would have been nice to get out and look at some of those buildings. A lot of history there.

I'm so glad we had this time together. 🎶 :eartug:

This reminded me to look at the real estate listings. Quite a differences in the prices of the properties. It's sad to see the historical places so dilapidated.
