this before calling 911.

The Maryland Environmental Service will be checking the sewer system for leaks by blowing smoke into pipes from Monday through Friday. Authorities say the smoke used for these tests is harmless and has a "distinctive but not unpleasant odor."

Town officials ask that residents run water in every sink and shower for at least two minutes in the morning every day this week. The water will fill plumbing traps and make the tests more effective.

If you see smoke emanating from your plumbing system, town officials advise that you open windows and leave your home until the smoke dissipates. Leaks should be reported promptly to Town Hall at 301-934-8421.
