'Now 15 per cent is rude:' Tipping fatigue hits customers as requests rise

The tipping point for Caitlin Green came when she was buying infant formula.

"I was asked to tip for an online order of baby formula," said Green, a new mom and radio announcer in Toronto.

"I wasn't using Instacart or tipping someone for delivery. It was just a regular online order and I was asked to tip at the check out to 'show support for the team."'

She added: "It feels like I'm being hit up for tips at every single turn."

I'm coming closer and closer to the conclusion that tipping should be either included in the server's pay or just included in the bill.
You don't get better service at all anymore - it's rare that I go to a restaurant with stellar service - heck, the ONE place you DO get friendly service is CHIK-FIL-A. And every decade of my life, it seems that standard tip just keeps going up along with, of course, the price of entrees.

I can easily remember when 10% was considered normal. I would say (in a state with 5% tax) "just double the tax, and that's the tip". Then it became 15, and that is now considered minimum.

It does tend to encourage me not to go out all that much.

I have a tip for all those restaurants - Enjoy the food you serve there because I won't be purchasing it.

I am reluctant to give tips to some people - like the person at buffets who fills your water. It's water. And they don't say a word.
Or anyone working behind a counter ringing up my purchase. Tip? What's the point?

There are tips asked on every sales screen you use. I'd do it sometimes but now I stopped on carry out orders. If I was sitting & eating there I'd tip. At the local ice cream shop I tip because its high school & college kids working.

Tipping should be based on quality of service. Period! It should NOT be mandatory. Also do not agree with getting a mandatory tip percentage when there are X number of customers. Wait... so I am bringing in MORE business to your establishment and we get punished for it? If the server is horrible, I still HAVE TO tip them 20%?

In Denver last week we ate at a restaurant that automatically added 2% for the kitchen.

... then Add 3% for the bus boy, 4% for the parking attendant, 18% for the waiter/waitress/waitron, 2.5% for the hostess, 4% for the bartender, 3.5% for the custodian and another 25% for the manager.

Then they should tip me, the customer, 250% just for showing up.

Just sneakin' around....
This past weekend we had the credit cards fees added to our bill to go along with the tip.
That kind of information needs to be made available before you dine, so you can make a decision to pay it or not.

But if they did, they'd have a lot of walk-away customers. It's almost crossing the line for illegal (in the sense that you didn't approve) add-on fees.

I ordered online for pickup and was told by the person ringing me up that i'm still supposed to tip because the "back end" gets tipped out by the wait staff so it isn't fair if they have to work more with less customers.

So I don't go to that restaurant anymore, they are the 6th best mexican restaurant in the area anyways and I can drive an extra 5 minutes for better food and better service.

Most places don't put the menu prices up on a large sign, so I wouldn't expect them to put surcharges on a sign either. But it better be in the menu (and probably is, in small font at the bottom).

A notice about the add on cc fees was indeed on the menu(s), and I get it, multiple 3.5% to 3.8% transaction fees add up over the night.

grə-too͞′ĭ-tē, -tyoo͞′-
noun
  1. A favor or gift, usually in the form of money, given in return for service.
  2. That which is given without claim or demand; a free gift; a donation.

I'm a tipper. I tip my server, my dog groomer, my hair dresser, the appliance repairman ... you name it, I tip them. If there's a tip jar out and the counter kid was great, I'll drop a couple bucks in. The better you treat me, the more money in it for you.

But I know full well that I don't "have" to do this - I choose to do it. It makes up for the times I've berated some dipshit who should be doing something other than interacting with customers. I won't leave a tip for shitty service, and I will tell their boss how much they sucked.
