Obama Is Right on Iran

"Talking with Tehran may help us wage the wars we need to fight.

After a recent Democratic presidential debate, Barack Obama proclaimed that were he to become president, he would talk directly even to America's worst enemies. One could imagine President Obama as a kind of superhero taking off in Air Force One for Tehran, there to be greeted on the tarmac by the villainous Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

Was this a serious foreign policy proposal or simply a campaign counterpunch? Hillary Clinton had already held up this idea as evidence of Mr. Obama's naiveté. Wasn't he just pushing back, displaying his commitment to "diplomacy"--now the most glamorous word in the Democratic "antiwar" lexicon?"

If Obama believes he can speak to a certified lunatic like Ahmadinnerjacket and stop him from playing with nukes then he is indeed naive.

I've never really understood why people are so afraid of a nuclear Iran .... I mean we only have 50 intel satellites pointed at them every second and I'd wager a ton of spies that know everything they do backwards. If they actually launched a nuke at us we'd shoot the thing down and turn them into a sheet of glass.

Same as any other country that could possibly threaten us.

eh.

Two reasons:
1) They could then nuke Israel...who would then nuke Iran...which could start a global nuclear war. (I could care less about Israel, but nuclear war is bad for everyone)
2) They could try to sneak a nuke into the US.

true on both counts

though a nuke being snuck into the U.S. I think would be damn near impossible for them (they are pretty big right?)

I don't think them nuking Israel (which is the more likely of the 2 scenarios) would start global war per say (it may, but I think it'd mostly be between U.S. Israel Palestine and Iran).

but who knows .... there are a million variables that only U.S. intel and Iran know for sure.

MAD would no longer be a viable defense.

You can't back down a cult of nuclear armed psychopaths when they think God is going to reward them for the death and destruction they unleash.

They don't have to be very big. It depends on how good their nuke technology is and how much yield they want to get.

That is a shocking statement.

No, they're not

I thinking nuking Isreal is the least likely scenerio. They don't want the area completely destroyed, they want the Jews completely destroyed. Their problem is Jews in "their" land, not the land itself. They don't want the land destroyed, like nuclear weapons would do. They'd be more likely to nuke us, or Britain (the root cause of the Isreali/"Palestinian" conflict due to promising Jews a homeland), to convince us to stop supporting Isreal.

Other nations would naturally form alliances, and would join in. It's the nature of the beast (the beast being the need for mideast oil).

:yeahthat: A big one is about the size of three Mexicans so there's no way something that size could get past our borders.

I did put a question mark on that for a reason people hehe

I have no idea how big a nuclear device is.

all the same, I'm still not scared of them.

You should be. like I am scared of Pakistan being the proud owners of a nuke.

These countries arent stable and their rulers arent stable. I mean politically and mentally.

Iran with a nuke can use this to threaten their neighbors. All of the Muslim sects are half crazed , they would as soon fight each other as anyone else. A nuclear weapon inthe hands of these nutbags is about as dangerous as it gets. Of course it will be eyars before their delivery sytems are technologically capable of sending one of them by ballistic missile, but Iran can drive to Israel in a truck and get close enough to destroy a lot of people. They deliver explosives into Iraq all the time, what is one more truck.

We dont need a missile to have a nuke delivered into the USA. They just put the thing in a container and send it to New York. When it gets in the harbor they set it off---long befoe the container is inspected. bang , there goes New York.

Its always been said and its true , that if an assassin is willing to die he can kill most anyone on the planet. The same may be said for a nuclear weapon. If the country that sent it is willing to suffer the consequences and they have a weapon, they will figure a way to deliver it. these people are lining upmin the streets to become suicide bombers is there any doubt they would be glad to deliver a nuke?

The easiest way to stop this is to keep them away from such a weapon. Its too bad the Europeans and Russians and Chinese are so busy trying to sell them something they cannot see this.

Hmm how about this only 15 miles off shore DC you would barely have time to raise and alarm

What I must mention here is that for all his bark, Mahmood jan has no real bite.

He answers to several "millionaire mullahs" who can void any decision he makes. That is why his predecessor had such a hard time pushing thru reforms. And these guys aren't exactly living in caves like the Taliban! Alienating the West and extra sanctions will hurt their pocketbooks. In the meantime, their president does not seem to comprehend that his "preaching to the choir" style doesn't play well on an international stage.

Part of Ahmedinejad's campaign rhetoric was to show how humble he was compared to his opponents. Certainly had the dahati vote with his "Average Javad" act. He was going to undo all the corruption in the government....all kos sher . He replaced experienced ministers with his own cronies and relatives - a brotherinlawcracy so to speak- including the Oil Minister.

The gas rationing caused by that last brilliant maneuver has pretty much ensured he'll be Agha Ahneedajob.

Do you think they have spies over here as well? Not being confrontational - just asking.

I'm not sure .... possibly (maybe even probably). Either way, we have way more dedicated and advanced methods of gaining information (at least I hope we do hehe).

Are you kidding me? You give too much credit to our intelligence. We are not that smart nor equipped. Geez, we couldn't even use the intelligence we collected to stop 9-11. :killingme
