My friend just got a Mastiff puppy and was wondering where they could get the best obedience training for the puppy. Friend lives in Southern Calvert County so St. Mary's County side is very convenient as well. Anyone know of any really good trainers/classes and etc? Thanks.

The pup is very cute. Just an FYI for your friend though that she may want to consider using something other than newspaper for liners. If the dog shreds the newspaper in the crate, she may start to shred papers outside the crate too, thinking it's acceptable. I use potty pads in mine or inexpensive bath mats with the rubber backing. And I use the reusable and washable potty pads.

Applejacks in Charlotte Hall is really good. I took my German Shephard there.

I did a visit w/ A-jacks, a consult for my dog. I didn't care for the place. As soon as you walked in the office door, the smell of poop was overwhelming, I had to look and make sure it wasn't on my shoe (It wasn't), it just smelled in the building. I know you have to leave your dog for a wk by itself, then come back for training so you can learn the commands and how to work w/ your dog. I asked if they provided any type of training w/out having to leave your dog, they did not and wouldn't even consider it. I have a problem leaving my dog for training for a wk, w/out knowing exactly what they are doing to it, to make it conform or do what they are trying to teach it...

I've never used them but I don't like their philosophy, from what I've read.

Canine Mind is really good. I've taken all of my dogs there and am currently attending a Saturday morning class with one of the Boxers. WoJo'smom had posted on here for a class and she is now taking her pup to the same class. The dogs have fun and there is no force, no choke collars, etc. Although WoJo's dog is a pup (6 months or so) he's done incredibly well. It's amazing to see the dogs actually figure out what is expected of them. I've been taking dogs to classes for 20 years and this is by far the best experience I've had.

I did the Chesapeake Kennel Club classes and they weren't for me. When Biscuit was just a pup, I took the puppy class. He was a typical HAPPY Boxer puppy and wasn't allowed to participate in some of the activities because he was too playful. :frown: I actually stopped going. I'd used them for other dogs in the past and the classes were okay but nothing special.

Canine Mind is more expensive than Petco, Chesapeake, etc. but it is well worth it. Here's their page that describes their training philosophy.

I took my dog there for the consult last year sometime, never followed thru w/ training there, didn't like the consult or the smell. I posted once about trainers and you mentioned Brett, I have checked out her site and conversed w/ her thru email. I had an appt for a consult in Dec, but had to cancel when my dog started limping. Thought it was her patella (sp?), she had problems and surgery on her other knee, started limping on the other side so I feared her left knee was going. She is much better and back to normal now, so I need to call Brett again. She must be great from reading your posts.

Bridget is signed up at Canine Mind. Thanks for everyone's advice. I am sure friend will be very happy with the results. She sure is a cutie. Does anyone have any pics of the Mastiff pulled from Tri County yet?

I had someone come by two days ago to get some hay. They had a mastiff pup, huge but they were on their way to training classes with him somewhere close by Huntingtown. I can call them a find out where.

Good Morning. For those of you who have attended classes at Canine Mind how was your experience with Tracie Tepke and Lori Walker? They will be conducting the June class at Interlude’s Pet Paradise in Leonardtown this June and I would like to sign my puppy for that class. I’m willing to drive to Prince Fredrick if the trainers for those classes are that much better but if Tracie & Lori come with good reviews then Leonardtown is much closer. Thanks!

I've had both in my classes. Since YOU train your dog, it is the philosophy and methods of training that all instructors at Canine Mind use.

I recommend you give them a try.

I highly recommend Brian and Amy Markowich! They hold classes in the basement of Three Notch Vet. I was so impressed with the puppy class that I plan on taking their advanced course in the fall. I would sign up early because classes fill up fast! They teach you how to apply what you have learned in class to situations outside and offer a "life line" for any issues you may have in the future.

I totally agree with you there!! Besides, it's so important that the owner understands exactly how to properly train the dog themselves and make the training part of their everyday life. Obedience classes are beneficial for both the owner and the dog.

Brian Markowich will be at the Animal Fair this Saturday from 10AM-3PM at the St. Mary's County Fairgrounds in Leonardtown. He'll be there answering dog behavioral questions. This is a great opportunity to come out and meet him and learn more about his philosophies. The Animal Fair is being sponsored by the St. Mary's Animal Welfare League, but rescue groups from the Tricounty area will be in attendance to adopt their animals as well as vendors, games and activities for the all family members. Bring your entire family (both two and four-legged) out for a fun day. There will even be a pet psychic, pet portraits and an animal accupuncturist on site! As well as food, a pet parade, pet pageant, pony rides and a moon bounce for the kids!

So how did it go? Canine Minds and the one at Three Notch. I want to hear your feedback! I need to start looking for classes ASAP.

Thanks!

If I were you, I'd do Canine Minds. They have a great philosophy...much different than many trainers. It is all POSITIVE. It will get your pup off to a great start. They hold the puppy classes in their building on Main Street in Prince Frederick.

Send Brett and email and tell her Abbey's mom sent you. I guarantee you won't be sorry.
