Obtaining a CCW in Maryland

Trying to get a carry concealed weapon [CCW] permit in Maryland is a farce. I am presently involved in the fiasco and would not have believed how ridiculous the process is, if I wasn't seeing/experiencing it first hand.

Fill the application out, affix a fingerprint card, a passport photo; oh, and don't forget your check for $117.

I'd been better off to just take my money and drop it on $117 worth of "scratch and lose" lottery tickets.

Completed the application then went and sat for an interview where the Trooper seemed he rather be cleaning a toilet; only to say I didn't have substantial reason.

I am a business owner here in the County and do carry deposits of other people's checks to the bank. Didn't even seem to phase MSP. Identity fraud, bank fraud, damage to my business reputation, you name it. I have an appeal hearing soon, but I doubt I'll have much luck.

The MSP don't give a crap about individuals safety or security. He!!, they already have their CCWs....

Ehrlich really has had a positive impact on this situation.... :buttkick: Keep it up Maryland it will just be a matter of time before you're number one in violent crime stats.... :coffee:

Time to move to Florida, or Arizona, or Alaska, or Vermont.... Anywhere is better than this Gestapo run state!

If you want I can make some violent threats to your life if that will help, cause that is the only way you are gonna get one here.

go here www.bradycampaign.org and pick a state with an "F" and move there, that would be your best bet.

It's pretty easy to get one in PA. I have a CCW for PA. But as far as they know, I still live there.

Hit up 2A. ON his forum, there is a push to get this changed in the MD legislature. Act fast though. It's supposed to be voted on in the coming weeks, if it hasn't been already. On 2A's site, there is a letter ready to go, and a list of all responsible gub'ment officials that need to get the letter. Hand written is the best method for it has to go into a physical file, if not the large round one at the end of their desk.

You can help get the law changed, but you have to act NOW! The MD House Judiciary Committee heard testimony regarding CCW on March 8, and they are most likely going to vote on it this Thursday, March 16. I attended the hearings and I thought it went very well considering our previous attempts. We need to generate as much noise as possible by calling, writing, and emailing specific members of the JUD committee.

The following text is from a news letter published by Maryland Shall Issue, a grassroots organization devoted to getting MD inline with the 38 other states that have right to carry laws. It is going to take a lot of work, but we can win this battle!

PICK UP THE PHONE!

The Hearings on March 8th went very well. The committee members were friendly and treated us quite well. We were not rushed or hushed as in previous years. The tough and antagonistic questions were all pointed at the gun-control folks (two from Ceasefire, and two from Coalition to Stop Handgun Violence). There were no antagonistic questions to those testifying on our side. The gun-control side had the same 4 people testifying (often caught in lies and exaggerations) on each bill while we had 40 individuals each of whom took a day off work to be there ... each testifying for the bills most important to them personally.

There was some good-natured humor when HB 1162 was introduced. HB 1162 would allow women (only) to have shall-issue CCW, while leaving the current system in place for men. We haven't pushed it because it is a bit tongue-in-cheek. No doubt it would be found to be discriminatory and unconstitutional. The reason for it is to make the legislators think. That seemed to work. Ray Givens testified in favor of the bill. He said he wanted his wife, daughter and mother to be able to defend themselves when he couldn't defend them. He then said: and then they can defend me. The committee members all laughed ... but with us, not at us. They got it.

We had a very good effect. There was a noticeable shift towards our side by the committee as a whole and by several of the legislators that have not committed to a particular side already. The committee as a whole seemed to clearly understand that the pro-gun side is larger, more honest, and more correct than the gun-control lobbyists.

However, privately, one of the legislators said they'd gotten 500 emails in support of the Assault Weapons Ban. I can't believe there are 500 people in Maryland who are in favor of the AWB and care enough to actually send an email.

Our numbers of people who care about preserving and furthering gun rights are far higher than those for gun control. That's very clear when nearly 40 pro-gun *individuals* show up for the hearings but only 4 gun control people (at least 3 of them paid lobbyists) show up at the hearings. If we can't generate as many emails and phone calls as they can ... then shame on us ... we deserve to lose.

For those of you who have written, called, and/or emailed... thanks very much! Your efforts have made a difference. The hearings were far more relaxed and pro-gun than previous years. However, I don't think we've generated 500 emails in favor of our self-defense rights yet. We should be able to generate 5000. Have you done your part?

For those of you who have not yet written, called and emailed... SHAME ON YOU! We have 3 business days left to have sufficient effect to get through the bottleneck of the Judiciary committee. The committee vote should take place next Thursday morning. The future is uncertain. We have our best shot at maintaining and furthering gun rights NOW.... in the next three days. Over the weekend you can't call, but you can email. Monday through Wednesday you need to call each one of these 9 just once. You can do it on your lunch break. If your dialing fingers are all broken you can dial 411 with your nose and have the operator complete the call for you. I would sure hate to have it on my conscience next year with an anti-gun Democrat as Governor saying to myself ... yeah, I could've called, but I didn't think it would make a difference.

It will make a difference. Five of those below have shown a clear shift towards our side. We need to generate enough calls to get them enough over to our side that they will want to vote FOR self-defense. We can do that ... but only if YOU care enough to pick up the phone.

Please support the following bills:

HB-12 (Repeal Ballistic Fingerprinting),

HB-14 (Repeal Integral lock requirement),

HB-529 (MD Constitutional Amendment - Declaration of Right to Keep and Bear Arms),

HB-1163 (Maryland Shall Issue CCW),

Get a permit to carry unconcealed. If I were a criminal - which I'm not - I'd be much less likely to attack a target who is packing visible heat than someone who looks defenseless.

'Sides it'll look cool to roll around with holsters with guns in them.

If I had a hand-gun, that's what I'd do. (of course that doesn't work real well with rifles or shotguns)

No. I've seen very little evidence to suggest that they give a crap about anything besides sex and money.

I'd suggest Arizona. Weather's nice, people are nice, scenery is nice. There's a bit of an illegal immigration problem, but if you're packing heat, it shouldn't be a bother.

That's where I'm headed at my first opportunity.

See, there's your problem right there. Become a gang member and criminal - you'll get as many guns as you want and nobody will bother you about it.

Thanks for all the input.

As for Maryland Shall Issue, I'm already on the emailing list for Henry's periodic updates. I follow-up with the phone calls and letters that are requested.

Same-ole-same-ole though, the liberals in Montgomery and Baltimore counties run the whole state...

The appeal hearing is in Annapolis and the Board hearing the appeal is made up of citizens who volunteer. I have to sway 3 out of the five.

What is the law concerning un-concealed weapons? Doesn't Virginia allow this?

Do they keep the $117 even if they deny your application? I am a small business owner and routinely carry large sums of cash. Sometimes several thousand dollars on good weekends. I have wondered about getting a CCW permit myself.

Contact your representatives in Annapolis. Tell them you want "Shall Issue Concealed Carry" passed. There is a bill before the legislature now.

I had the same problem. Carrying lots of cash several times a week to the bank. At the time the form wanted personal info about my employees which I was NOT going to give! Since then I learned the secret hand shake. Transfer at least 15K between bank accounts each week. I know a few who do it. That's the threshold, or it was a year or two ago to get the magic permit. When I had the business the local cops knew I was carrying and did not care (wink, wink), until I got into a real jamn of course. Forget the "threat" notion, you have to document it, have good records and if it is by phone, verified and the numbers will be checked. Besides, every time you renew, you have to prove it all over again. Good luck, but go with Henry, it's a long haul. You can get a non-resident CCW from Fl that applies in (I think) 24 states. Every state surrounding MD except DC. Go figure. Ehrilch isn't the problem- POLITICS IS. He can't do it against a stacked political deck. Got rid of the business and the associated headaches. CCW, ? I am for it, crime prevention, the "Perp" has to wonder, is he/she armed? good deterent. :elaine:

Had this guy not been one of the privileged few in MD to have a CCW permit he would probably be just another statistic.

I had high hopes for this article when it started out saying
Victim kills attacker during robbery attempt

so I was very dissapointed when I read

The shooting victim, whom police had not identified Friday night, was taken to Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, Moses said.

are they ever going to get it right?

... turns out in very little time the determined it a good shoot, he was not charged and was given his firearm back promptly.

How did you find that out? Can you provide a link to the updated article. Thanks for your post -- interesting stuff.

Also, does anyone on here have a CCW permit? What reason did you give in order to get it?
