Yep..they sure do! There was a seriously capable towing and retrieval company that serviced the farthest reaches of the massive and difficult Tellico ORV near Murphy, NC back when it was still open. Worst story I'd heard of was a $2,000 effort that took them all day to pull off. Far cry from 48 grand...

This jerk deserves everything he got stuck for and more. The police should bill him for wasting their time. The utility should bill him for restoring their road to the same condition it was in before he illegally trespassed. He knew damn well it was private property, isn't all property private or public? Four wheeling on public property is strictly regulated in most areas, especially on the east coast. Driving on private property without permission is trespassing.

Either way he definitely did not have permission to drive on it.

This is like the idiots that decide to climb a mountain before a blizzard, and then expect rescuers to risk their lives to find and save them at no charge.

Damn, he endangered nobody, I'm pretty sure he didn't damage the roadway with his mostly stock Jeep. People who steal 100K usually dont have to pay back 50K.

I think even more rare is the intuitive grasp of the physics of a stuck. "MONGO PULL!!!!" is about as much though as most people put into it.

There are a couple trains of thought on that. There's the "Drive in 2wd until stuck, then engage 4wd and continue til stuck, then engage Low Range" with the option to engage lockers anywhere along that line. then theres the "Engage things before you think you need them, I don't got no stuck fetish".

Me, I'm of the second opinion.

Yup. The trick is to NOT get stuck.

Of note here is that pretty much any 4wd nut out there with a wife or parents to justify stuff to can now go buy a BUNCH more gear, winches, front and back, straps, etc, and use this as an excuse; cheaper than getting stuck!

He drove through a gate clearly posted no trespassing. If you owned a 100 acre farm and some local 4 wheelers decided it was ok to drive around your fields and roads would you think that was ok? It's just dirt, not hurting anything right? Or what if some idiot decided to drive across your townhouse lawn, it's just dirt so it's ok. I don't care about the tow fee, and they definitely are gouging him.

But worse is that he needlessly tied up the cops that could have otherwise been running radar and keeping us all safer.

All the gas canisters make it look like a portable, in the remote chop shop. A fine looking, and capable vehicle overall.:yay:

MIG/TIG/Stick, all metals, a 4HP air compressor...220V 8kw aux power.... Good eye.

Still have the bed, its just not on that truck any more...it's all on this one now.

Holy cow! That's awesome! I've mentioned this before but I went to school to be a machinist a lifetime ago and I worked in a tool and die shop. One day I miss located drilling a hole in a project and thought to myself "If I could weld, I could fill this, machine it down and my boss would never know". I joined the Navy as a welder. :coffee:

Just last week I was taking an online welding refresher course, thinking about wiring a stick welder into my garage.

Why you ask?

So I can build a monster truck! VVROOMM!!!

Knowng that area, cops not overly taxed. But in any case, nobody here thinks he should not be appropriately punished for trespassing. The only thing folks are complaining about is that silly tow fee. Which you initially lumped in with "what he got", in fact, you recommended even more charges for him. "This jerk deserves everything he got stuck for and more"

Buy a MIG welder instead. You won't regret it. You can buy a pretty decent 175A machine for $500-600 these days..

that would put the 'trail side' videos of a guy using 3 truck batteries and a stick welder to shame doing frame repair

I have pictures somewhere of me welding the 4-link structure back together underneath the rear end of a rock crawler broken down in the middle of a huge rock garden. Had to run almost 100 yards of welding lead to get to it...

Agreed. I'm actually a certified Tread Lightly trainer and put on seminars and short-courses at wheeling events. Improper and/or illegal off road activities are a big factor in closures of public land to ORVs.
