While I wasn't on board totally with the 50% there is some logic behind it. Going on a strict percentage system there would be kids who had failed for the year by the 3rd Quarter. Now, what do you do with him 4th Quarter? He's going to be in the class with no hope of passing so 99 times out of 100 he'll find something to do to amuse himself and it will be detrimental to the class 99 times out of 100. And no, he can't be sent to the office and no, calling the parents has no effect so the teacher is stuck with the kid.and those not completing assignments can not get anything lower than 50%?????? and cancel valedictorians? I wish I could have gotten 50% of my paychecks "when I dint feel it goin to work, workin my job man..."
Now, give him that 50% and he still has a chance to pass for the year if he gets whatever drags the cumulative up to 60%. That may give the teacher room to teach the class rather than managing that one kid for nine weeks. Will that kid actually do enough to pass the class? 99 times out of 100 the answer was "No".
The Valedictorian thing was a result of different moving parts, not least of which parents complaining that their kid didn't get it and filed lawsuits to that effect (that wasn't Calvert necessarily but nationally). I also didn't agree with getting rid of it.
