My 2nd son was 3 lbs., actually bigger than Tigger's, 3 lbs. 15 oz., nearly 4 lbs., (2 months early) and my husband and I were ONLY allowed in the NICU 2 times a day. One time in the morning, and one time in the evening, that is it, and the baby was ONLY allowed to have 2 visitors at a time. They didn't want him held too much so he could gain weight, so my husband and his father went in at 5 a.m., and my mother and law and I went in at 5 p.m., each visit was limited to 30 minutes, but the last week he was there, we often stayed an hour, each minute we were allowed to spend over 30 minutes was a gift. We were only allowed to have 4 other people authorized to go in the NICU beside my husband and I, another gift, because it is usually only 4, including mom and dad.
I'm not saying this is the case with Tigger, but I know from OUR past experience that we sat home pacing the floors. About 3 weeks after our son was born, he was allowed to come home at 4 lbs. 9 oz. This is not common, and of course there were conditions and circumstances that enabled us to take him home as soon as we did.
After I posted this, I wanted to edit it and say that I know for a fact Children's Hospital is much more limited, because there was a girl at the NICU that was thrilled that her son was sent to Southern Maryland, because they allowed much more frequent visits.
I know Southern Maryland gets a lot of flack, but I will say, they are a dayum fine hospital and I think the labor and delivery staff are top notch.
