ok time to be serious...

I know, I know so unlike me....

Anyway, I've decided to finish school. I dropped out many years ago because I didn't know what I wanted to do. Then life happened and so on and so forth. So here I am with a job that I hate. I've been doing this for almost 5 years and I can't take it anymore.

I've decided to take classes online and finish my degree. I still have no freaking clue what I want to do but I figure online college is the easiest thing I can do with a little one at home. Plus my company and most others if I get a different job will pay for college.

I guess the advice I'm looking for is what to major in. My choices are limited but I have a few choices. Accounting, Business Management, Criminal Justice, Computer Info Management, Early Childhood Ed, Human Resouce Management and a couple others. For those of you out there in the real working world what are the hot fields? None of these sounds terrible appealing besides the Criminal Justice but how far will that really get me? I was thinking probably Business Management.

What do you guys think?

But wait, there's more...
BM goes a long way ... offers a lot of versatility and variety in the market ... if I had it to do over, that's what I'd have done, and will probably go for when I go back to UMUC.

Happy Camper!
Congratulations on deciding to go back. If you are looking for your job to pay for your schooling be sure they don't have a clause, you have to stay for x amount of time (usually 1 year) after your last class or you have to pay them back. Note not one year after your class but one year after your last class meaning you could owe them for 10 classes not just 2.

I would LOVE to go to cosmetology school but that requires actually going to school. My parents have enough on their hands with my dumbazz brother and his ex girlfriend not taking care of their two kids to be much help on a regular basis to me. I don't want to over burden them with having to babysit. Online looks like the most reasonable way to go.

I also applied to DCPD and am set to take my tests this weekend. But with shift work and whatnot that's not really reasonable either. :frown:

Whoa.......stay away from criminal justice, crazy hours, no life, unrewarding, very high rates of divorce, alcoholism, and suicide, I've got two out of three working on the third....:boo:

Forget management and do accounting if you can handle it. With an accounting degree you are as eligible for any job a management degree holder is. Not vice versa.

Business management is the degree people who can't hack the accounting curriculum fall into.

Be about it
Business Mgmt. is what I'd recommend. It is very versatile, and if you do stay in the contracting industry many contracts are written to require degrees in an area of business. If you don't stay in the industry, it's still extremely useful. UMUC has an awesome online program, couldn't have done it without them.

I've been going to school for a couple of years on and off since I graduated. I'm going for Business Administration at CSM. My company pays for the class and books as long as I get a C or above in the class. I think it will help getting a new job down the road if I decide to leave here. Congrats on going back and good luck.

Hey Vrai, you're tests aren't helping, lmao!

You know I might make a good realetor. The only one's I've ever personally met only do it part time. Do people do it full time and make a decent living. How much school is involved?

To become a real estate agent, I believe only involves taking one class and a comprehensive exam. At least thats how it was in 1987.

My friend just got her license. She went through Prudential in Waldorf. It's 60 hours for classes and $180 for tuition and books. She does it parttime.

One more thing, a degree won't make it any better. You just end being paid more for a job you hate. I have come to accept that no matter what you do, eventually it becomes work and you end up hating it.

She also said that it's about $1000 to get registered for everything afterwards. $60 for test, $45 for license, $500 for Association of Realtors and a bunch of other stuff.

I know this. I've been doing it and hating it for 5 years now. If I'm going to be forced into doing something I hate because of poor choices on my part (dropping out of school to move out and getting knocked up by a jacka$$ a few years later) then the least I can do for myself and my son is get paid better to do it. His father doesn't pay his child support so it's imparative that I have a decent paying job.

You are absolutely right, but saying something and actually getting up and doing something are two totally different things.

Not a slight on you, just offering incentive.

None taken. I won't hold the fact that you haven't met me against you. I'm one headstrong little thing. Even being a young single mother I still do better for myself theh most people my age and several that are older.

I've grown up with a certain lifestyle and would like my son to have the same. I make good money now but not enough to do everything I'd like to. I know what I have to do to get what I want. That's why I've chosen to finish school. No it may not be my first choice but the only thing it can do is open up doors ya know.
