I think the point is sacrifice... though I don't think a life/sins and hashbrowns are in the same boat... but if you are questioning it - sacrifice it - it's only 40 days!

Hashbrowns are not the same thing as french fries. Had you said, "I'm going to give up fried potato products," that would be a different matter. As it stands, as long as the potatoes aren't cut into strips and deep fried, you're in the clear.
