Old Steak in a Sack

It was sad to see them go. They had good Ice Cream.

There is still a bunch around Baltimore and Frederick county.
My familys dairy farm in Walkersville was part of the Highs milk Coop from the 1930's through the 90's.
As a kid spending summers and harvest time there, the Highs in Walkersville was a few miles on a fixed gear bicycle but well worth the trip for a peach or cream soda and a pack of Drake's hockey pucks.

Near where my parents lived in Silver Spring, they had one of the first "Buffalo Wings and Beer".
It came down here - and tanked. I was so looking forward to it. But, just didn't happen.

But it WAS a 7-11. And I used to go there almost daily. It was easy to get to.
Maybe the arrival of other stores made it unnecessary.

I always crossed over in the morning and went to Mr C's 7-11 across the street.
His was cleaner, better stocked and long term employees that knew your name.
I was sad when Mr C passed.
And I never spent money with that bitch that owned the 7-11 in Mechanicsville.
After seeing her multiple time belittle customers and her staff, I never went back.

See, I've been to the one up near Iverson Mall many times, and it's been in business longer than just about anything in the area.
It's not a palace, but the food is good - and popular. Lots of places are actual dives, but people like them anyway.

BWB *was* down in St Mary's Square for a very short time.
Actually I've been looking on the web, and they've closed most of the ones I'd ever heard of.
They had one in Frederick, Gaithersburg, Glen Burnie.
Except of course, the original in Cloverly, near my parent's old house which is still around.

I remember when in Lusby, I was reluctant to go near a place called "The Frying Pan" just because of the name.
But it wasn't bad at all.

The Virginia stores were,

The original iteration of High's was High’s Ice Cream, an ice cream parlor founded by L.W. High in Richmond, Virginia in 1928 and purchased by James R. Highs. Jr. with two partners in 1938, at which time there were 16 stores and an ice cream plant in Richmond. In 1941, Convenient Systems, Inc. of Winston-Salem, North Carolina purchased the chain, then numbering 50 stores. Gregory remained at the helm until 1976. The company was acquired by the Capital Milk Producers Cooperative, who grew the chain to 350 High's Dairy Stores and Restaurants, and sold the Virginia stores in 1987 to Southland Corporation, who converted them to 7-Eleven stores.



Fuel at High's gas stations was previously supplied by Shell and Citgo. High's first made a foray into proprietary fuel branding in 2011, when it was rolled out at a prototype station in Chester, Maryland.[2] On March 1, 2012, High's, then based in Hanover, Maryland, was acquired by the Carroll Independent Fuel Company.[3][4] Following the Carroll deal, most High's stores broke their ties with Shell and Citgo, began selling High's-branded fuel supplied by Carroll, and underwent remodels. Some High's locations continue to sell Shell-branded fuel. High's is now based in Carroll's Baltimore building.

My uncle Stanley LOVED that place and we used to go there every time we took the grill and the burn barrels to the car wash to hose them down. One time when we was there my uncle was talking to that owner and he said that he just started out with a idea and some meat and that gave my uncle a idea about starting his own business. It was called Stanley's Beef Bag and he started it with a burn barrel, some buckets, some ground beef, some ingredients, some fire, and a sign. He used to set it up in the church parking lot and sell to people going to church and then coming out. He put ground beef in buckets and then put them in the coals in the burn barrel until it was cooked. Then he mixed in the ingredients and poured it in a paper bag or double paper bag with extra sauce. It was good for a while and he had sales and promotions and coupons. He even drove to Kinkos to get business cards and flyers for a contest to see who could eat a double with extra sauce before the bottom fell out of the bag. Then the county health people showed up and said he had to have a license to sell food. He showed them his license but they said it was only good enough to allow him to gather up all his stuff and drive home. When my uncle went back to ask that guy why he didn't say you needed a idea, some meat, and a license that guy was on vacation. Now I guess he'll never get to ask him why he left that part out.
