Open House 12/4 and 12/5

happy to be living
The Chesapeake Marketplace in St Leonard has their annual open house Sat and Sun. There are a lot of great deals from the vendors as well as food, snacks and beverages provided.
The marketplace has a mixture of old stuff, new stuff, vintage and high quality antiques and furniture and some hand made items. There are many great gifts for people that are hard to shop for. My booth offers 20% off including my handmade wind chimes made out of flattened silverware.
Please consider shopping local and supporting small businesses. You may be pleasantly surprised at what you find there!

Ahhh. Aren't they always open? Like during the week and at least every weekend? Not directed at you. But shouldn't the Formans be heavily promoting this "Open House". Seems they are pretty tight with advertising dollars, which I'm guessing is in part of the space rent you pay? I rarely see any advertising by them promoting the vendors in the market place. One would think they would up the promotion of the place, not just annually, but weekly and monthly, especially after they shut down the live auctions next door. You guys must have really taken a serious financial hit after that happened?

For giggles, after picking up The Calvert County Times dated Thursday Dec 2nd, and reading it, I decided to scan every page for an advertisement related to your "Open House". Nope. Nothing. No advertisement from the Chesapeake Market Place. There is however a quarter page ad for a Southern Maryland Farm & Christmas Auction, yesterday, conducted by Farrell Auction Service. So how do you feel about an organization that takes your space rent and does noting to promote the vendors to get people to visit the place? Or is all the advertising left to the vendors who pay space/booth rent? Also, nothing about the "Open House" here on SOMD.com's website community calendar either. Do they do any advertising for you guys at all? Or are they like the proverbial fly? Just waiting for sh!t to happen.

 Why do you have to be such a jerkazz killjoy in somebody else's thread?? Good grief - you don't have to like what the owners of that establishment do or don't do. You're purposely trying to muck up someone else's thread.

I finally took some time to go visit frequentflyer's booth at the Marketplace yesterday!

She has a ton of interesting things - not to mention her cool wind chimes handmade out of flattened silverware and her trinkets made out of recycled costume jewelry and other baubles.

It would take all day to go through all the shops that are there. You could easily find gifts for people that you don't know what to buy. There are also lots of cool little shops with vintage clothing that I'll definitely go back to look thru in the future should I need something like that for a specific outift or costume! 🤩

No, I'm trying to bring to attention of the way the owner's of the market place treat their vendors. However, if the vendors are fine being screwed, or the no advertising policy is part of their vendor booth lease agreement, then that's fine as well.

I would guess they have enough traffic without advertising...
Maybe they have a huge email database?
Maybe a sign outfront works with the drive by traffic?

Maybe thay dont do any advertising, Some businesses have that luxury,

Whats your advertising budget?

at one point, I worked there as a fun job. anyway, Larry & Kay HAVE AN INTERNET/FACEBOOK PERSON.
in reality were they expecting folks from New York, Delaware or Toronto Canada? No.
Factually, people were there and sales were good. So, why spend $$ when they had a good turn out by word of mouth?

"Be the bidder be the Buyer".

Think of a person having a yard sale. And that person's neighbor having a yard sale, and that persons neighbor having a yard sale and so on. Now imagine all those people saying this sucks being outside and start renting a space, say a starting minimum 10'x10' space in a building about 100' long and about 40 foot wide encompassing two floors. And instead of charging yard sale prices, get as close to retail as possible. And those that own the building don't assist in getting people to visit the very building the houses all those 'individual' vendor shops. Even lowly thrift shops advertise more than this place. Mine on average, around 8-9K year.

Was this during the live auction days? Advertising gives credence and confidence in public perception as well and goes directly to the "Goodwill" of a company.

Are you aware of the vendors at large feeling slighted?
Are there an excessive empty booths? Its not like folks for three county's don't know they are there.

I employ 3-4 on average, my budget is under 600 a year. I do a small ad each spring in a monthly periodical. I havent done a mass mailing in well over 10 years, the juice was not worth the squeeze.
I have all the work I want....

And the big question is, why do you care?

I knew nothing about the place till reading about it here.

I would suggest you expand your travel circle a few more miles as the crow flys.....
Are you aware just above it there is a Nuclear Power Plant? They built it in 1968.

To question 1: At one time, yes. Many dissatisfied vendors constantly bemoaning with their concerns to management that fell on deaf ears. 2. Again, at one time yes, the place seemed nearly void so many vendors left leaving many sporadic spaces empty leaving those remaining being allowed to expand into some of the empty spaces a bit to have merchandise hung in walls to cover those bare walls.

The original pull for those vendors was the live auctions that brought hundreds to the auctions every week and hundreds others during the week for those to view what was being auctioned prior to auction day or to drop off items to be auctioned allowing many to visit those vendors.

I've known a couple of vendors that, though they had plenty of quality merchandise, could not get enough sales to cover the rent on their
booth space due to lack of customers/people visiting the market.

For many, some, not all, businesses, once out of sight, they are out of mind to customers unless there is advertising to remind them of the business. I'm sure in your business, there are not many in your area of operation, due to the skill involved leaving few of your type of business, which makes your business stand out, and obtaining that advantage having an unnecessary need to advertise to those that need or require your services, simply because of word of mouth in the industry you are in. However in the world of retail, of which these vendors belong, there is far more competition for those consumer dollars necessitating the need for advertising.

I am not bashing those vendors. They offer many fine products, personally made, or repurposed, or saved from the dump and cleaned up to live again in someone's house or business such as fine furniture, and more, maintain their booths with pride and accomplishment, are good honest hard working hopeful people, trying to make a small income for their endeavors. The problem, (opinion), I have, is with the management that cares not one iota to bring in more visitors to the building to support the vendors, though would say otherwise only as lip service.

yup, my best line was "yup" and "yo"
So that was you? Awesome. Was it you that would also wear funny and different hats or a crazy wardrobe at times?
