Origins of Blue Laws

Just chiming in here...

Honoring a Sabbath Day is an Old Testament thing. Like the rest of the 10 Commandments, they are archaic and inapplicable to Christians. IOW: You will not go to hell for going to work on a Sunday (or actually Saturday, if you're going to be all Jewish about it).

But then again, I eat meat on Friday - even Good Friday - almost without fail. So what do I know?

just in case you're not, i'll break it up into the Catholic version as shown on Ten Commandments - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. (note that the #s are different but context is all the same).

1) I am the Lord your God. You shall have no other gods before me. You shall not make for yourself an idol.
2) You shall not make wrongful use of the name of your God
3) Remember the Sabbath and keep it holy
4) Honor your father and mother
5) You shall not kill
6) You shall not commit adultery
7) You shall not steal
8) You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor
9) You shall not covet your neighbor's wife
10) You shall not covet anything that belongs to your neighbor

I'm not saying that people honor these, but they still seem relevant. The sabbath one is something only done by more religious people. The others seem like good rules to live by.

Nevermind the religious days off, because the way this economy is headed the whole country will be working Tuesday-Thursday...

Thanks.

Still - Jesus's death and resurrection freed us from the laws of the Old Covenant.

That's why I can drink milk with my steak dinner.

I never said the 10 commandments were bad rules to live by. Just that you're not going to fry in hell for working on a Sunday. (Most of the rest of the 10 Commandments expressly forbid behavior that would, no doubt, be avoided by anyone who wishes to walk with Christ anyway) There are two mentions of a sabbath in the New Testament. (Col.2:16; Heb.4:4). Neither of them state or imply that a weekly holy day is required of Christians.

Gotcha. I keep forgetting that Christianity was just a lazy Jew's way of not having to abide by the older laws anymore and not having to feel bad about it.

How would you like to live in Germany then? Stores close at Noon on Saturday, except for the last Saturday of the month, when they can reopen after Mittagspause. Only stores open on Sunday are florists, so that you can buy flowers to take to your hostess for dinner. Last time, I noticed up North, one Weekend stores were open Sunday too, Mantelwochende.
These rules were instituted by the labor unions, give workers time off.

Maybe workers want to work on Saturdays and Sundays. They could always find a Monday - Friday job if that's their preference. That's a silly law.

If that's what you want to take away from it that's fine. But it doesn't remotely come close to what I was saying.

I actually consider myself *distinct* from a Jew - not a Jew at all, in fact - rather than merely a lazy one. Meaning to say that Christianity is a different religion from Judaism, with a different set of laws, rather than a superset of laws on heaped on top of existing ones.

But I'm glad that you keep Sabbath, eat kosher food, and kill those who spend too much money. And be sure you don't mix your fabrics when you get dressed!
