Otterbox style cases

I need recommendations on a hard case with a detachable clip for a Galaxy S3. My daughter's iPod has an Otterbox Defender case on it, but the reviews are not all that great on it. The reviews are saying that the new material can swell and does not do well when being pulled in and out of pockets. It has an odd feel to it. This is for a carpenter so a hard case is a must. I have the same phone but just have a little silicone cover for it. It's enough for me, but I'm not hard on my phones.

Detachable what?

I have a Ballistic two-piece case for my Galaxy S2, and I like it. I've had it about 15 months now. It has saved the phone a few times during a fall. There wasn't an Otterbox case for my particular version of the phone at the time.

I've got an iPhone with the Griffin Survivor. Probably one of the best cases I've ever had. It is a bit bulky but it has lasted much longer than my Otterbox case did.

Survivor with Belt Clip for Samsung Galaxy SIII | Griffin Technology

The reviews are not great on that one either. I'm reading a few now that have issues with the functionality of the phone with the case on. :ohwell:

The only reason this is even getting TWO stars is that it DOES keep your phone SAFE. But then again, so would locking it in a steel box. That is about what this equates to.

For starters I'll say the design is pretty nice, but its actually quite difficult to take apart and put together, especially the first time. Now lets get onto what problems there are.

- Volume you can hear gets cut by about 1/3 from the case
- The headphone jack will only accept thin headphone cables with the case on, the rubberized outside case is so thick that a normal auxiliary jack will NOT fit (period) into the phone while the case is on, which means if you are like me and listen to music at work on speakers, you bought the wrong case because you can only do so if you REMOVE the case.
- "dust guard" is a sham. I am a cigarette smoker and the first night of having the phone I noticed that my cigarette ashes got INSIDE the screen protector so in any real dust environment you are definitely going to be blasting your phone with small particles, you just more than likely can't see them. Ashes are pretty visible, grains of sand are not.
- I've dropped my s3 only one time since owning it, and it has been because of the case. It fell out of the belt clip when I bent over to pick something up.
-It is INSANELY hard to hit the BACK button, I have to try numerous times. Everything else is very responsive, just nothing you have to touch on the edge of the screens (menu button, back button, or the top tool bar for notification) I sincerely feel that some big wig at a company designed this case for another phone where it worked well, and said lets just stretch the identical design to fit another phone.

All in all like I said, my phone dropped and never got hurt, the case provides lots of protection, and the clip FEELS very sturdy, but sometimes that can be deceptive. You lose so much function with this case it is appalling. I would return the case, but I do not want to mail a case back, wait 2 weeks for a credit, then find another case, then wait 2 more weeks for a new case to come. If you want to use your smart phone easily, and actually feel like you have a top of the line phone this is not the case for you. If all you are concerned about is dropping your phone and don't use it much for anything other than calls and texting this is great for you, however a S3 is intended for far far more than that, and this company did an amazing job screwing up their design just to make a quick buck.

Poor design, could not really use buttons on cell due to metal adapters that covers the screen. The protection is great but with limited use of the cell. I definitely wish i would have purchased something else. This design is unacceptable for its price.

The reviews are not great on that one either. I'm reading a few now that have issues with the functionality of the phone with the case on. :ohwell:

The only real issue I had with mine was that I got tired of uncovering the camera lens every time I wanted to take a picture. Solved it by cutting off the the little flap that covers the lens. Yeah, it looses some of it's protection, but I've had it on for about 2 years and have not had any of the functionality issues mentioned in the review. May be the difference between the iPhone and the Galaxy.

Oh, I don't use the belt clip either. I either put it in my pocket of just carry it in my hand. Not the ideal solution for you, I know but it works for me.

I had one when I 1st got my iPhone, damn near bullet proof protection ...

definitely bulky ... I have had an otterbox defender for about a yr now, I swaped the Griffin for it, the 'rubber' is swelling and stretching

Lifecase had some interesting videos on their website

I think that I'm going to order the Ballistic Hard Core case. Out of all of the ones that I've researched this morning it definitely has the best reviews. :yay:

Stop buying these fragile phones and get a Droid:) My Razr HD Maxx has taken three waist high or a little higher drops onto concrete surfaces and the only damage has been slight marking on the carbon fiber corner and one small gouge on the metal edge band and one piece of the plastic corner has a mark.

My Galaxy S3 has been the greatest phone that I've ever owned. I also do not buy phones based on their durability. I buy them based on functionality.

Well, of course, if you are gentle on them, that makes sense. The equipment should match the environment it's used in:) If it cannot handle the environment, then all it's functionality is useless. Me, I work a lot in hangars and out on aircraft parking ramps, so my environment is a bit different:)

Durability is a function also. A BMW has great durability around a racecourse, not so much the Rubicon trail. A Jeep Wrangler Rubicon wouldnt survive one hot lap of VIR.

BUT if you can get the durability by adding a protective case then it's perfectly fine to buy a phone based on your functional needs.

True, for me, I keep my phones in my pockets, I don't like belt clips, so cases that bulk up a phone or give its surface more friction dont work for me. And given that I use a dash mount, that restricts my choices in cases even if I were to use them anyway.

I am addicted to buying cell phone cases! I however haven't gotten an otterbox yet. I would rather buy the color ones. But I did see today the new LifeProof ones, and once they release it for the S3 I might buy one of those, I like how slim it is

I just found quite a few really cute silicone shells on Amazon for under $3. Some you can even buy in bulk.
