Our black lab just ate chocolate!

I have the joy of expecting my inlaws in a few hours so of course, I'm busy with last minute cleaning before they get here. I took a pile of papers from the office and put it on our bed. There was apparently a chocolate bar in that pile, based on the many shreds of wrapper all over the place. We never have candy in the house and the one time we do, he sniffs it out!

Jake apparently jumped up on our bed (which he isn't supposed to do) and ate the entire bar while I was busy scrubbing away in the guest bathroom. He's never had chocolate before. How concerned do I need to be and what symptoms should I look out for?

I'm no vet but I know that its really dark chocolate (think Baker's Chocolate) and in large quantities. Worse might be some loose poop. He is a larger breed so he should be ok.

My old Boxer once ate an entire chocolate cake that was on the counter. The next day he had the squirts some kinda' bad, but nothing else.

Don't sweat it. We used to use snickers bars as rewards for K-9's after training. Half for the handler, half for the dog. :lmao:

Thanks everyone. As if dealing with the inlaws for a couple of days isn't bad enough, now I may have a sick dog too! :bigwhoop: :smack:

Well, I'm glad it was just one chocolate bar and he's a big guy so hopefully he'll be fine. He just may be spending some quality time outside today. I'm so relieved to hear he should be fine.

Chasey_Lane, a whole cake? :killingme

Our dog once ate an entire bowl of Hershey's Kisses, along with most of the foil on them. We saw foil for a while in her poops. She was fine.

Yeah, luckily he's a big boy and the chocolate bar was fairly small (it came with a Vermont Teddy Bear). I've always been so careful with all dogs I've had and never had a dog eat chocolate before.

Hubby just finished putting in some wood floors and our carpet is fairly new. Jake will be in the kitchen or outside for a while in case he gets sick.

Back in 1980 my Great Uncle and Great Aunt took a vacation to Hawaii. We kept their black lab for them while they were gone. He had 1 accident in the basement. HUGE freaking pile. Happened when my parents went out for the evening and left us home with a babysitter. I had the lovely job of cleaning it up, since I was the only male in the house at the time (yes, my family is sexist and cleaning up after the dog came under the heading of "man's work"). I was 8 going on 9 at the time. I am STILL traumatized to this day by the experience.

That's horrible but how far away do you live? Hubby's at work until 6 tonight and Jake may need you later. :killingme

JK - I wonder how soon my inlaws will be here? Do you think I could play the pregnancy card and get out of cleaning it up?

This happened at the old house. PC decided to help himself to a three layer white cake with milk chocolate frosting. He was not a happy camper with the sour tummy and the squirts.

I have a black lab/rotty mix and she will eat EVERYTHING that has the smell of food

My girl use to wear "vanilla scented" body spray and got it on her robe one day....the next morning the tie was half eaten and the dog was throwing up

Think of it as diaper changing practice...

Think of it as diaper changing practice...

That would be a really big baby in a really big diaper and a whole lotta crap! :killingme

Jake did get sick after eating the chocolate, just once, and my hubby was home at the time. He said, "Don't worry, I got it" and cleaned it up. He then proceded to tell me that there will be no diaper changing for him come March because he's been cleaning our cat's litter box for 5 months now and that's an even trade. :smack:

The litter box has been mostly my job, has been for as long as I remember. Unless you have 50 cats, it doesn't come close to diaper duty.
